My Holmes Hobbies package arrived today! Woohoo!
Can't wait to try out the new ESC. Gotta tear it open and waterproof it first though.

I have a double layer system of waterproofing that has never let me down so I prefer to do it myself. I have some ESCs and RXs that have almost as much time underwater as in air. Haha

Not that John doesn't do a great job, but I just feel better doing it myself.

What's the conformal coating that is used? Name. Now I know why you like to waterproof yourself. Very time consuming I'm sure but well worth the investment. Glad to see this back up, going strong.

Thanks Maddog. Yes. It is a bit time consuming but I just feel better about doing it myself. Especially when I'm planning on going to a big event.
After the Conformal Coating dries the ESC will get sealed again with black RTV. This gives me two layers of waterproofing.
This is the stuff I use. I found it at a local electronics store. I feel the urethane is best because it dries Rock hard and is very durable.

Been doing some styrene work to build a box to hide the ESC in the rear.
This morning the chassis was blown apart for paint. I went with a slightly lighter metallic grey. This color is pretty close to the color of the wheels and should add a bit more pop than the almost-black grey from before.

Front axle is rebuilt with Vanquish knuckles, chubs, VVDs, and locker. I'd like to make it all Vanquish but I really like the RC4WD Poison Spider diff covers.

I like the chassis color as well. I have used a similar metallic gray. Been having really good results with engine enamels lately (need baking/curing). Looking forward to the completion.

Thanks guys! I like the color too. I was going to go back to purple but the automotive paint is expensive and I don't want to spend the money in it right now. Plus time is a factor at this point. Shane the engine enamel sounds like a good idea. I have not tried heat curing it but sounds like it would work well.

Got the Waterproofing done on the Trailmaster ESC and motor.

After the conformal coating the board is generously coated with black RTV.

Then it is placed back in the bottom half of the case. I then make sure RTV gets everywhere on the top of the board and all around the heat sink. The ESC is not sealed to the bottom of the case. This is makes the second layer of waterproofing. Installing the top half of the case does not help with waterproofing but I put it on anyway.

The sensor plug will get RTV after I plug in the wire.

On the motor I RTV around the sensor plug and the bottom of the board. I also add some extra around the sensor plug opening in the end of the case.

RTV in the sensor board screw holes just for good measure.

Then the sensor board screws are installed.

A small bead around the front end of the can and it gets installed.

A small bead around the back end of the can and then the motor can be assembled.

No pictures of the process because my hands get covered in RTV and I don't want to touch my phone until I am cleaned up. Haha

A thin bead around the motor contacts.

The last step is to figured out which mounting holes you will use and plug the others. Some 3mm set screws with Loctite on them does the job.

Now the electronics are ready for submarine duty. Do not try this yourself unless you are prepared to void any warranty. If you have doubts about doing this yourself have Holmes Hobbies do the waterproofing. I have been doing this for years and figured out a system that works reliably.

I've personally sent more bad than good on the wireless controllers. Short range and takes one extra hand vs having a switch on the remote.

I did try one and couldn't get the power I needed out of it for some reason that was with a beefy winch ...[emoji12]
Pulled like a 70 yr old man [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Thanks a lot for the input guys. I will save the wireless controller for some other rig someday and try it then. I don't want anything iffy going in before Scale Nats.

Damn Griz Guido is getting the royal treatment. The chassis is looking amazing bro"thumbsup"

Thanks Bananaclip. It's not really a royal treatment cuz most of the parts I already had. But some of it is new. Like the VVD stubs are the ones that were already on Guido, I just ordered new Wraith inners for these axles. [emoji41]

Luckily My package from RPP already had a HeyOK winch controller in it. :ror:
