about 3 years ago I got back in to the R/C world(out of it for 20+yrs)... I got the SCX10 and got a good servo, 35t brushed motor and a cheap radio... I could have not done it any better going this way...
Why You ask well out of the box it is a Curb crawler(meaning it will climb up curbs) for a beginner that is the place to start... the motor is in my opinion gets the job done.... the servo you done want a to cheap out on that cause you need the "power" to steer while being able to move the weight of the rig a bit...
cheap radio well that is so if you don't like the whole r/c thing you did not sink 200 or more on a good one... but if you do stay it becomes a great back up or a testing setup..
then like most said you can buy a ton of hop up parts to make it better... if you look around in your area they may have Comps or a GTG go to one ask questions 10 to 10 odds they will tell you just about any thing you will need to know and have a rig there to show you.... some might even let you run one of their rigs...
good luck!
