choosing MY first crawler

Goin used is a good idea. Like most hobbies getting started is the most expensive part. Are you wanting to do an open rear blazer or?

I guess that's what you'd call it? Looks like from my limited experience with the hobbies terminology what really appeals to me is the "scaler crawlers"? The very realistic looking rigs with full interiors, seating, driver, passenger, accessories, coolers, tools and such. I want to be able to have a complete, full interior to the rig. Not sure how I accomplish that though, just time and custom fabrication?

Well what I would do if going to put a blazer body on it is get a dingo or wranger body cut the interior part out and glue it into the blazer body and then get a proline (makes rc parts) roof rack and while on that site look at their scale accessories and mount a light bar in front of it and throw some dingo flares on and of course paint it whatever color comes to mind. If you were wanting to do a cage on the back I would recommend a truck body with cage like I run. Post a pic at the end. Or a 70s style bronco body. Can't remembered what they call them cgr body I think it is. But here's a pic of my truck.

See now you're talkin! That's the info and ideas I want to hear. I'm figuring this out more and more with folks help as I go along. I really don't care for the "truggy" look myself, I do like the jeep bodies and the Blazer and Bronco body as well. Maybe the Bronco the most actually, just make it open top with a cage surrounding. Oooooh yeah! Thanks for the great interior idea, I will be getting the wrangler RTR model for sure to gut and transplant. lol

I'm not too big of the truggy look either that's why I kept my bedsides. I jus got a lil to scissor happy on the rear instead of taking my time cutting out the rear tailgate to look like it was conformed to the flat bed. Let me see if I can find a link to the caged bronco and see if it tickles your fancy.

Oh yeah! Jeez, now I'm torn between the Bronco and Blazer body there! LOL I'm a Chevy guy though so probably go that route and stay true. Thanks so much for that link, I visited Proline's site earlier but somehow I don't think I came up with these fully detailed interior bodies. Those are precisely what I'm looking for, just take down the sheen on the interior parts and add do a matte exterior and I'll be thrilled!

Your going to love the scx10 ... I recently picked one up and only got to pkay for a day before I decided to start with the upgrades ... being my first scale and somewhat crawler I couldn't be happier ... first I got a set of beadlocks and interco tsl tires for it then had to head out of town (career truck driver lol) and ordered some links and a lift kit ... and just the sheer volume of readily available parts for this chassis makes tuning it to your taste next to effortless ... infact now my misses wants one aswell lol ... I have a stampede 4x4 with a castle creations motor and speed controller that im probably gonna just sell or trade off for myself another scx10 ... I literally spent about 20 minutes at the end of my driveway climbing up and down my ditch with it haha ... most fun ive had with a rc truck in a long time .... good choice indeed .. and theres tons of info about the scx10 on this site

Is there one place that I can see ALL available bodies for the SCX or is it just multiple manufacturers? I just want to see all of them available to make sure I'm not missing out on one I like even more.

There's so many different bodies to choose from. Let's see off the top of my head jus on manufacturers there's Proline, parma, hpi, new bright, Nikko, and sooooo many more. Best thing to do is narrow it down to what brand is ford dodge Chevy etc etc. I know you said you like Chevy earlier so then you need to decide truck or SUV. Its gonna be narrowing it down to what you have in mind. Now what you have in mind might not be redialy available so you might have to think of how you can customize it. Trust me tho once you have a body you think you'll like once you finish it you'll find another one you like. Best thing with bodies as long as you mount them all the same you can change them out as often as you like.

Now I'm reading that the Proline bodies don't even have proper wheel well clearance! I'm not paying $80 for a body I'm gonna have to carve up looking like $%^& just so it'll fit. Those new bright bodies are my favorite so far as they look marvelous. That was until I saw they want $200+ for them! :lmao: Maybe I just can't get what I want for a reasonable price in this hobby.

It looks mostly that they need to change their links to get to the wheel base they need. Most bodies do fit rather well without having to trim them. And most bodies are gonna need a lil bit of adjustments with your suspension links to get a longer or shorter wheelbase. That's why I suggest going with a honcho or wrangler scx purchase cuz they already have the longer wheel base then the dingo.

Gotcha, I'll make sure I scoop up a honcho or Wrangler original chassis. I really don't want to trim any off the blazer body. This stinks waiting to free up the money for my chassis, I saw a perfect buy on Ebay go by last night. It had upgraded linkages, esc, servo, lipo battery, wheels and the 12T motor I want all at around $300.

That's not bad. Have you done a lil research on motors and their ratings? A 12t motor might not be the best for crawling will have good speed but not much torque. The lower the number on the t equals faster speed but lower torque the height the t rating the slower the speed the higher the torque. In example a 12t motor will be fast but lack torque a 55t motor will be slow but have good amount of torque. I, an most others, run a 35t motor and reduced my pinion on my motor down to a 16t so I slowed the truck down even more. Vs the stock 20t pinion. I would get the blazer body that you want and see how it fits. You might have to trim jus a lil bit but might not. Its gonna depend on what tires you run too. My pit bull tires tuck nice inside everything where as my Baja claws are taller and jus have to raise my body a lil bit on the body posts.

Oh ok, I got the motor and the pinion ratings backwards in my head then, I definitely don't want a fast motor, I wanna craaaaaaawl. :)

How is the top speed with your setup? Compared to a walking pace I guess.

I'd like to be able to just slowly pull away from myself at normal walking pace but also creep at a caterpillar pace when I need to.

Mine will get away from me at a normal walking pace. But when I wanna crawl up something it creeps real slow. But that comes with learning how to throttle. I like my setup cuz if I need to go down something steep I know I will go a$$ over tea kettle I can goose it a lil bit and more less jump off it. But that will jus take practice when you get out crawling.

Tower Hobbies has the rubicon RTR on sale right now for 299.00 and with their promo code for spending 280+ is $35 off, so your looking at $264 and they also have easy pay, which divides the total cost into 3 payments if you want.

Cheers,
Wade
