Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

Where there is SMOKE  there must be a need for new parts  I assume since I saw a nice puff of white smoke accompanied with 'that' smell, that I fried a motor this past Wed while crawling at CDM. It still worked after it cooled down and still does, but.......

I would like to get a Holmes 2012 Team Crawlmaster and ESC (when available) and re-gear for crawling. I tried to find a gear chart within this thread, but admittedly did not read every page yet. Since I mainly want to crawl and the stock speed was plenty, maybe even more than enough, I assume that a 16t or 20t might be a good choice for me, but I am a little unsure about what RR gear ratios and or pitch to choose. Right now I have the stock RTR set up and am using a Traxxas 5800mah 25c 7.4v battery, and I am open to suggestions.

Holmes 16t CM with maybe 58/12 32p gearing. I run dual 16t in my XR comp rig.

Considering I am sticking with 2S lipos, how would the speed / crawl capability compare between a sidewinder/Holmes 13t brushed setup vs. an MMP/ tekin 13.5 brushless?

I have both escs, just deciding on which way to go for motor. Which would be more water tolerable?

I'm looking for a good balance, decent crawling, but also some speed for rally style driving. Making a course through the woods.

You need to be careful with the brushless motor in water. Speed will be a little lower with brushed.

So what is the best way to make a Sidewinder water resistant? Assuming I'll go brushed then. Cheaper, too! Building two, and it'll save me from having to get another MMP (have the 'Winders already).

I'm putting a holmes 35 turn in mine on 2s some 3s ( I have both) what spur and pinion in 48p and 32p when I change over? Thanks "thumbsup"

Any suggestions on a Brood motor for the Wraith? I use his motors in my comp XR10. Holmes seems to be out of stock of his motors, not sure how soon his stock will be replenished. Guess I'm not in a big hurry, just checking options. "thumbsup"

There are lots of gearing suggestions in here. Read through the thread and see what works for your style. It all depends on what you plan on doing.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Okay im running a novak sensored 18.5t crawler 2s system with 17/84 and crawled for 4 hours and was cold. Is this a good setup or should i go 17/87 or screw the system and go another route. Im looking for best of both worlds but good battery life and low temps i know it asks alot but thats what im looking for

If it works and your happy with it then use it. That's not enough for me personally so I run a faster system with higher voltage and I also don't like the Novak controllers.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

What do you think about a HH Crawlmaster 20t with a Tekin FXR running 3s. I was wanting the BRXL but unfortunately he won’t have them in stock until the end of February beginning of March. I will be doing trail running and crawling, but would still like some wheel speed.

Like i said i want better because it aint what i want. Im looking for sensored brushless but need good battery life and good temps

What gearing you thinking same and mamba max pro is what 2s and 3s

Didnt see anywhere where you mentioned if you wanted more speed or torque or...? I run 3s on everything in general. But if you want max run time then you're looking at max capacity which going up in voltage is going to hamper (physical dimension).

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

I want to do a bit of crawling with a little trail riding so I'm looking for torque with minimal top speed lose but i understand you have to give some to get some

What do you suggest?

Thats with stock gears. Noob here, so not really sure on how to or even if i should change gearing
