Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Can anyone tell me how much faster the Mmp and tekin 13t combo is than the stock rtr system ? on 2 cell ?

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

This thread is mainly about Wraiths. Check out some of them and see if the style of driving is what you are referring to.

Grab a Tekin Pro4 3300kv and RX8 if you want big power.
Yeah I checked out a bunch and a lot of them are the style I drive. I just liked the fastback chassis and still wanted to crawl more than what the wraith did. I searched a ton of motor threads and landed on this one. So I figured I would take a shot. Thanks for answering me though. I didn't mean to hi-jack thread. I tried to keep it as much about motors as I could.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

I just got my RX8 in my Wraith, came up with this as an idea to get it in. The motor, Novak Ballistic 4.5T I wanted to use as I had it in my box. Really didnt know what to expect other then its more then likely way to much. But before I got to much further, I temp wired it up to see how it would run on 2s. Took some video and Im pretty surprised how well it does.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Spent a lot of time researching the Wraith when I decided I wanted one. Have an SCX10 which I love for crawling over my rock pile but wanted more speed while retaining that crawling ability. Also knew I wanted to give Holmes Hobbies a try especially after seeing how people on here worship them. Spent hours reading and rereading until after much debate I pulled the trigger on an HH BR-XL ESC and Crawlmaster 13T motor.

This line on page one is what I ended up making my decision on:
"Good crawling and OK speed: Holmes Crawlmaster 13t and Holmes BRXL"

Tonight I finally got a chance to run my Wraith outside and see how she performs.
:shock::)"thumbsup"
For me the Wraith/BRXL/CM13T combo is damn near exactly what I wanted. Speedwise it just felt right. Slow, fast, in between, it just worked as I had hoped when I ordered everything. This is on 7.4v NiMH so a move to 2S Lipo should be perfect.

Thanks Harley for the threads filled with information. And thanks HH for making such a sweet setup. Definitely going to go BRXL and some form of HH motor for my SCX10 in the near future.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Hey ive heard of others useing a castle sidewinder SCT 4 pole. Any good? Would you need to change the gears or could the stock handle it?

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

I have the castle SCT 3800kv 4 pole.
Running stock 80t with a 24t pinion.
Running a 2s 4000 LiPo

Clocked the car at about 22mph. doesn't seem to run that hot

I have epoxied the alum tubes inside and out of my driveshafts to prevent the crumpling (so far so good)

I Ripped the end off of the stock front driveside axle shaft ( about the 10th battery in)

Cracked the cup and pin in the front driver side of a set of HR CVD shafts (about an hour worth of harse driving)

Yes it cogged a little with the 20/80 gears. and alot more with the 24/80. low speed crawling isn't great but the car is very fun basher as long as you can keep it on the wheels (home made droop kit helped alot).

I turned off the drag brake and the reverse lockout.
set the brake to around 30% to prevent accidental flips and rough landings.

I have some short videos on youtube with the same username as on here. Still need to make a decent one showing some crawling and hill climbing.

I have coated the ESC with liquid tape and the truck has been dunked in a frozen lake along with splashing through all kinds of puddles and mud deeper then the tires without issues so far.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Ok thanks! I dont plan on to much water action. And you only get 22mph outa it ? what gears did you get? Metal I assume.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

So I could put the system in without to many problems?

Pinion is metal 24t 48p from associated
Spur is the stock 80t 48p plastic gear (for now)
all other gears stock (for now)
Mostly just waiting to see what will break first

This is about as fast as i would want to go with a wraith the truck is just to pron to roll overs and cartwheels.

The Castle SVC combo will just about backflip from a stop and pull rolling wheelies if you drive with a lead finger.

I would suggest knocking down the lower rpms throttle response to prevent wheel kickout when climbing over or up stuff

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Hi, a friend discourage me to get a Mamba Max Pro ESC for the reason its getting too hot. is this true? I'm confuse which one to get:

1. Tekin RS Pro combo with 13.5t redline motor or Pro 4 3,300

2. Mamaba Max Pro pair it with 13.5t redline motor or Pro 4 3,300

gearing will be 15/60 32pitch

* is 3,300 kv equivalent to 13.5t?

Thank you.

Sounds like your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. Mamba Max Pro is good for either of those motors.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Thanks harley. i think i'll go with either MMP or Tekin RS Pro with redline 13.5t. What do you think MMP or RS PRO?

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Every time I go to the Holmes website I see the Crawlmaster & 13 Turn combo sold out!

Is there a secret to getting your hands on these things or what?

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith

Harley
I have switched my gears to copy yours.
Robinson Racing Idler Gear
Robinson Racing Final Gear
15 tooth 32 pitch Traxxas Pinion
60 tooth 32 pitch Kimbrough Spur Gear

Do I need to change the drive gear also?
Wanted to know before i put it all together.
Also are you using the axial slipper clutch too?
Thank you
Shawn
