After a few weeks of sponging up info from this thread I just oredered a Holmes BRXL and 13T motor for my Wraith Kit that is under the tree. Super stoked as this is my first crawler and first electric. Should be here in a couple of weeks which willl give me enough time to build the kit. Did i mention that I am excited... Not sure who is more excited for Xmas morning my 2 1/2 year old or39 year old me!

I don't support anything from CKRC. Use anybody else please. RPP, TCS, or Holmes are my suggestions.

Well I read around for awhile and I ordered the novak 35t rock star i think it will suite my needs for crawling

No, he was talking about the Rockstar motor which is brushed. I will not buy any Novak brushless until I try one that is completely redesigned and up to current standards. The Timbuk 2 maybe ok but I am very skeptic of it still. Novak just keeps banking on that antique drag brake technology, hopefully this one is different.

Not yet, soon though. The 1st of the year was the plan. We'll really start hitting it hard then.

I ran an SV2 on 3s lipos for quite some time in my Wraith. I was running a Traxxas 21t Titan 550 brushed motor. I have it geared 20/87 which makes it slower than stock on 2s but faster on 3s. I has amazing torque and runs cool. The ESC stayed cool too. I was a faster setup than a Novak goat 3s in my buddies wraith running the same Nanotek 3300 turnigy lipos.
I think the key to saving the sv2 from fried egg syndrome is proper gearing. I was also running a BEC for my servo which really helps with stress on an ESC .

Not as a combo but Holmes sells both of them. Not trying to pimp his store really, just the first place that comes to mind at a reasonable price. Tower is usually a little higher.

How does a brushed motor require more maintenance? What do you have to do to maintain them?

Brushes are wear items, they require periodic replacement. Also after more run time it is a good idea to cut the commutator to keep the motor running its best.

So I'm looking at getting the crawlmaster 13t motor and bxrl possibly. checking out the Holmes hobbies website and I'm a bit confused with the options for ordering their motor. What does is mean by timing and vehicle, brush instillation soldered or bolted, and custom wind? also what type of speed will I be looking at with this combo with a 2s lipo?

If you are not familiar with the concept of timing you'll need to read up further on that in the electronics section. Timing is set based on voltage and rotation. The Wraith spins in reverse rotation so that is why he asks what vehicle. Timing for 3s is usually about 7 degrees advanced. Bolted or soldered brushes is just how the are installed, it's not a huge difference. I run bolted. 13t is the wind.

60/15 is a TIGHT fit. I don't know all the options though.

I found I was able to get up to a 50T Spur and 25T maybe more Pinion.

My test gearing will be 56/18 which maxes out at almost 15mph, hopeing this will be a nice happy medium. I can always gear down a bit if the terrian dictates a slower pace.

I don't see anything with a higher ratio then the stock 4:1 as a great idea unless you have an 8th scale power train. 4:1 is fast as is.
