Car stereo help

What did you say! My old system, 4 JL 15's. Earned me a small hole in the eardrum.
Still can barely pass a balance test!

Looks like 4 12W3 or 12W6's in a clambshell in a regular cab S10 with a camper boot? That pro'lly was a bit loud. I had 3 12W6's, 2 JL slim line 8's in door pods and Boston Pro 4.2's in the kick panels of a 2-seater 300ZX.

Wish I had pictures of some of the old crap I built back in the day.

Built a Silverado with 12 15s in a stepped wall (walk-through with a top) behind the front seats.

For normal play it would only use the bottom row of three 15s and still beat you to death.

With all of them powered up you could watch the cab flex at the roof and A pillar and the doors would shudder on the hinges. We didn't bolt the doors shut back then.

We powered it up in the hangar where the show was going on and we were about 50 - 60ft from the dB meter in the center of the hangar, had the truck on display. Powered it up in the open hangar with the doors open and it registered over 120dB. Forget the exact reading but it was over 120.

Damn thing would make the CD changer skip even though we had it on a 20ft extension and OUT of the vehicle on the concrete. Your shirt would flap from the pressure waves the thing created. George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" would feel like it was going to turn you inside-out.

Craziest system I have ever messed with and the sad thing is that I don't remember what the actual dB reading was with the meter in the truck and all 12 of the 15s running.

The funniest one was the four 15s I built in an isobaric setup for Cody. Same show we had the Silverado at and Cody (imagine a real-life Jules from Pulp Fiction) powered up the 15s, had'm strokin' - was showing off the system before we took the car in for judging. He then walks around to the trunk and opens it to show off the nice lexan wall and lighting I'd made for the front of the enclosure so you could see the inner set of 15s.

So Cody opens the trunk with the subs cranked. While he's moving to the trunk I'm trying to stop him. It was one of those awkward situations where you just can't get the words out quick enough and you just KNOW you're gonna watch some crap unfold.

So Cody opens the trunk. The pressure created inside the trunk by the speakers is now released, the front (outer) speakers JUMP forward, and ripped the surrounds/yanked the cones on both inner speakers due to over-excursion.

Cody just closed the trunk, took a draw from his cigarette, and walked to the front to shut down the stereo. "Looks like we're not taking that one in." :lmao:

ha ha, my name is cody, and that sounds like something i would do! :lmao:

no box built yet.

I took 2 junk 10's out and am replacing it with this one 12. I have no doubt it'll be plenty.

I would disagree on the box. I think the best manufactured boc out there are the Super Bass Pro Boxes. My buddy had one with a center square port for 2 12's. He ran 2 RE SE's in an extended cab '95 k1500. They pounded in that box.

they are built almost the same way as a sledge hammer. just a little bit bigger port.
have you ever heard a good sub in a sledge hammer box?
im not sayin the super bass probox isnt loud.
i havent heard that box with 2 12s in a 1500... im just saying the sledge hammer is louder and cleaner bass! one of my best friends works at car toys and ive been through this whole process with him. ive heard damn near every box that is made.
my buddy ended up making me a custom sledge hammer style box built exactly for my subs! but if you have one 12. pic up a sledge hammer box built for 1 12 and it will be the cleanest sounding bass you have ever heard!"thumbsup"

hey jason, when are you gonna be down in the springs next? ill want to show you the system in my jeep. lol

Like I said I am not all about the SUPER bass, I am not planning on driving around town playing magic mike. I used to have a Honda CRX with 3 15" JL's in it ;)

I am going for clean sound.

We'll be building a box specific for this, into the space I have set a side in the truck for it.

Yes i have heard a good sub in a sledgehammer box. My old neighbor had a 12" Sundown in one and your right it did sound very good, but i like the pro boxes better, Not only do they sound awesome, but they look at home in the back of a pickup with that truck bed liner on them.

I was never dissing on that box, just a personal preference"thumbsup".

False floor, sealed enclosure, down-firing, let it rip.

basically this box is going right behind the back seat, under the package tray. That also happens to be where the hump in the floor for the rear axle is.

The area is only 10" tall, and I am putting a 12" speaker in it.

I'll try to snap some pics so you can see what I am talking about tomorrow.

Basically I think it'll be like you said, downfiring, with 3 sides going down, the side towards the front of the car open.

It'll work well. "thumbsup"

Put a couple of "legs" on the front. May only need one, may need two or three, depending on the length/construction of the enclosure.

When you build the enclosure, look at the suggested and minimum enclosure volumes and pick a number that's at least halfway between the two - don't forget about displacement of the speaker subtracting from the volume of air.

From there you can cheat the amount of air volume the speaker will "see" with polyfill.
