Can someone explain the runtime disparity between these two rigs?

///it is more than likely you grabbing more throttle to compensate for the lost wheel speed from the additional gear reduction.

This. It was my issue as well. Just took a while to figure it out, though it seems so simple. Driving mostly in low gear 60:1 is very low, I was running wide open a heck of a lot more than I normally do (on 2S) I regeared to 47:1 and got much further down the trail.

Go on a hike and note your distance before you tire. Then gain 20 pounds and go back on the same hike. You'll get tired sooner. The same goes for the battery. Weight is huge in terms of run times. There are other things, like parasitic losses in the drive train, but weight itself is enough to kill run time.

What I think I'll do is test the following on the same trail:

  • 10t and 9t pinion gears
  • 3S Lipo
  • Proline Jeep body

Obviously not all at the same time as I'd like to see which has the greatest influence, but it may end up being a combination of everything that will give me the best run times.

Now to find some time to do this all.... :lmao:

Another vote for 3S... My TRX-4 is probably well north of 10lbs at this point (lots of brass), and I generally get about 2-2.5 hrs on a 5000mAh 3S. Still running the stock Titan 550 w/ a HW 1080 ESC...

Is this stop and go or straight trail runs? I'm sure I could stretch it out to 2 hours by crawling, but I do a lot of hiking with my truck [emoji16]

Mostly long trail runs up and down hillside trails. Our local crawler spot (Dry Creek in Grants Pass, OR) has like 5 miles of trails cut into the hillside...

That's awesome, then! I've got a few pinion gears today, so I'm just waiting for the weekend and I'll be testing some things out!

Quick update.

Tested the 9t pinion gear with a 2s lipo. While the truck ran well, it got me less run time on the same trail I used before.

I suspect because the 2s isn't as powerful as the 3s, it needed to run faster to get up to walking speed with the 9t gearing.

I'll be trying a 3s the next time I do more testing.
