Cambpell Racing Dragon Slayer

Any updates on this build?

That's really good timing! After a cold winter and not much motivation I finally got this thing back on the bench. Ended up getting a set of the Method 105's and I think they are a bit better looking for this build than the 101's.

I plan on rearranging the front winch mount and lightbar. I wasn't really sold on how I did it in the first place and after some thought came up with an idea to easily mount the winch just like the Dragon Slayer and just make a couple tabs for the light bar. It'll make for easy removal if needed.

The rear axle is now a centered Currie which is rad but I kinda want to see if the F9 is released in black as that's the actual pumpkin used by Campbell.

I also plan on re-wiring the light buckets up top as the lines going back are too bulky. I think that just running one line back would suffice.

Shock mounts are still somewhat an issue as they aren't easy to get to and I'm not sold on the way I mounted them.

The three body mounts below will require me to use a lathe so that I can get a center hole drilled to tap for some 3mm screws. I think that will be a great way to make this a drop-in cage just in case I want to run the regular Yeti body.

The other thing that would make this build go slower is that I got the short course bug and a Tekno sct410.3 will be in the mail next week. We'll see how that affects build time for this :)

Aaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnd a pic of the new wheels just because.

How's the build coming along? I can't wait to see a running video of this thing. Gonna be sweet!

I can't wait to get it running! I'm going to be re-doing some things but will be back on the table soon. Very soon.

This thing is crazy!!

Thanks! It's hanging on the wall right now in skeleton form. I need to get back to it!

Are you still working on this?

...I hope so.

I sure am :). Actually picked it back up recently. Finally got some new rear mount posts lathed out and tapped to mount it more properly. Also working on some of the styrene bits for the interior. I'll post up some pics soon :)

I was just talking to my buddy about building this exact rig.... I am bummed that you beat me to it but it looks like you are doing it justice. great build so far man, the amount of metal work required for this is something else entirely. I would wager to say that if you were using tubing you could probably shave a solid 1.5lbs off this rig. That solid rod is heavy stuff. I built a U4 mog truggy out of solid rod and it was unreal how heavy it was. I rebuilt a yota truggy that I had made from solid rod, I used 304 stainless .20 wall on this last build and it has way more tube work, heavier axles and still weighs 1.37lbs less than it's previous version. I couldn't believe the difference. I love the scale of this build tho! So awesome!

Thanks for the kind words!
Had some time last night so I put in the new mount posts for the back and drilled the bottom of the winch so it would go over the bolts for the fairlead. More to come soon I hope!

This will be my first attempt at a scale build from nearly scratch. Starting with the base chassis of the Yeti I am going to keep the tube work as close to the actual as possible. To start I sent my brother some images of the new Dragonslayer, dimensions of the yeti and said go. A few weeks later I had a plot of the basic tubework on paper for scaling.

From that I started in on the tube work. It has been going pretty well for a first build and it's much easier to tac with a tig welder vs brazing but doesn't look as nice.

Onto the pics.

Can you clarify what the weight scale is reading here?

And what do you think the running weight might be when done?

Yeah for sure. It's 5lbs 7.8oz. That was just the cage. gasp!

I'm assuming this thing will push 10-11 pounds when it's all said and done. Heavy heavy.

I don't plan on bashing it. Mostly for show but will probably do some light crawling at events and such.

Got the rear sway bar tubing welded on (almost). Tough to get that heat right and hold the piece in place and not burn through or warp the tubing. A few more tacs later on and should be good.

More to come I promise.

Got the esc wired up although one wire on the motor might get swapped out. Also added the under dash panel that resembles the actual in some fashion. I decided to leave the motor and esc exposed but that might change later, who knows.

I'm thinking of adding actual switches to the dashboard for lights and maybe even powering the winch controller, just to give it that added something. Steering wheel needs to be added soon too.

I'm hoping to be at a stopping point with the cage work soon so I can finish welding it up and maybe painting it. Then onto wiring! That'll be fun :)

I know this thread has a couple years without updates but, did you finished it? another thing, any chance of sharing the plans? I'm thinking in doing the exact thing, a Dragon Slayer on a yeti. If so, thanks in advance

I haven't posted for a long time. A LONG time. Every once in a while I pull this thing off the wall, add some more bits and then put it back on the wall. I did drive it one day. It's really fast and heavy but surprisingly is stable. I really do need to get it to a working state and call it good for a while. It's been a fun build for sure and I hope to keep tinkering on it.

I agree - lovin' that build.

Frankly, I'm quite surprised that no one has released a 1/10th version of this style vehicle yet... the closest you can get is the HUGE Kraken from Vectra.

If I were running Horizon Hobbies it would be my next release, now that Axial / Vaterra / Losi seem like they'll be under the same masters.

These have been doing very well in 1:1 racing for many years now.

Public perception of the chassis style IMHO exceeds the Bomber type which I love, but it's time for more variety!

That's an impressive looking beast! Great work! "thumbsup"

Thanks! I should stop staring at it sometime and finish it haha.

Agreed. My hope is that one day I'm close enough to an event that they are in and get a picture of this thing on the hood of their Slayer :) That would be awesome!
