Cambpell Racing Dragon Slayer

The weekend went good and not so good. I had a few hours on Saturday and took full advantage, building a lap workbench. I don't have a dedicated room or space for RC stuff so I've been using the living room floor for the past couple years. This ended on Saturday! Now I can sit comfortably at the couch and move the desk back into the other room when not in use. Easy peasy.

Got some green rings for the Methods. This helps with looking more like the Campbell Racing Dragon Slayer! Sad part is while I was trying to clean the threads on one of the wheels the bold head popped off. Let's hope that 4 out of five bead lock bolts hold it together.

With the front light in possession I found out that the mount I had for the winch was too far forward. So off it came and a new one made up. After lots of fitting I got it to work. The winch, light and fairlead are tac'd on!

Also got some Vanquish trailing arms in (I barely made the stock I think) and mounted those up. Getting closer with each day!

So here's the tough part of the build. Weight. This think is going to be close to 10lbs all said and done. Pretty heavy but that's why I got the HD motor and bigger esc.

Also mocked up a rear tail battery box to house the battery and controller(s) for lights. I'll probably get my brother to design the template and have a friend print this out on his 3d printer.

Pics because we all know that's more important than all this blah blah blah :)

Made a light bar. This took a bit of time but so far totally worth it.

Got my new tig torch all setup, it's a CK gas cooled 9 (125amp, 100% duty cycle) which will be great for all this detailed tacking and such.

On with the pics I guess :)

Nice work so far. What are your plans for shocks? I'm having problems finding a spring hard enough to run on the front of my fully modded Yeti (9 lbs RTR). I currently have powerstroke's mounted on all 4 corners and the red hard springs are too soft.

What lights are you running in the lightbar? Dude, this thing is sick! Really good work here and this is by far my favorite full scale truck! It's an all out beast and probably the baddest full scale basher vehicle ever made.

I know this is probably way too much for ya to make and sell the frames, but if you ever do, count me in for one for sure! I'm really impressed8)

Looking great , we just need someone to make some 2.2 nitto's !
I know right?!? I'm going to settle for the Treps that are on there now, maybe someday there will be a 2.2 that look close enough to the Nittos.

Thanks! You got me worried though. This thing is going to push the scales at 9lbs. I won't lie, the thought of doing new A-Arms that house dual shocks has crossed my mind. More than once.

Got 3 of the 4 styrene panels made up and mounted for the rear triangle. That will house the light controller and separate battery. I'm wondering how to approach the 6.0volts vs 11.4 volts for the different lights (Vanquish bar and the buckets). We'll see what I end up doing. A BEC would probably do the trick and put a switch on it somewhere.

Thank you for the kind words :)

The lights I'm going to run in the light bar are just the inexpensive drift car light kits you find on Amazon. They are like 11.00 and free shipping. That will at least get me started then I can go from there if I want to try a different setup.

I'll probably re-do the side tabs for the light bar mount but we'll see if I can clean up the welds a bit. It's really tedious to get those welded on since the wall thickness is so thin.

Are those Vanquish lights in the light bar you made?

The light bar buckets are the Proline 6085 kit. I like that they have a chrome liner inside the light which should project better than ones that are just black. They also have that same sort of shape that the Dragon Slayer does so scale points there ;) I still haven't decided if I'm going to try to make up the two front lights. I'd want them removable but that would prove a bit difficult.

The front 1" light bar under the nose is the Vanquish rigid light bar. I wish I would have had that when I started the build but what can ya do.

Hope this helps answer your questions :)

What's worked for me as far as front shock setup, are powerstrokes with axial 14x54mm blue springs with the rpm a-arms flipped upside down. My yeti weighs just shy of 9lbs. However, a-arms that can house either dual shocks or just a bigger bore shock would probably be more ideal for a rig weighing in over 9lbs.

Good to know thanks!

Update:
Got the electronics started! Setup the wiring for the bucket lights and the vanquish 1" lightbar. Call me silly but I'm running the lights on a completely different setup. Battery will be housed in the back tail and will have a small 1300 mah 3s lipo spliced over to a BEC to run the lower voltage led's. Didn't take any pics but I will soon!
Also wired up the RX8 and PRO4. My soldering skills are novice at best but so far things are turning out ok. Trying to keep things clean. Pics will come soon don't worry :)

Side note: I fell victim to a local buy on a Wraith with some good parts and then ckrc had a 15% off sale. Bomber coming my way! They wraith will be parts swapped then sold and stuff will get moved to the Bomber. I really need to finish this build. I get side tracked very easily.

Also want to say thanks for all the interest in this build so far. I had been wanting to start a Dragon Slayer build for some time and it's been really fun to see this thing take shape. My favorite part so far is the light bar.

Carry on :)

Those green rings are sweet and nice job on the light bar very cool.

Thanks and thanks :)

Been switching gears toward buying and selling some RCs so I haven't had a ton of time but did manage to get the battery strap setup and tested. I cut two holes in the edges of the stock battery tray and I think it'll work out nicely.

Next is to finalize the electronics and get these styrene panels painted!

This thing is kindof a pig. without body panels, light bars and winch it's at 9.2lbs. Definately needs some different shocks and on that note, better mounting up front. There's some material I can remove up front where the mount plate is so hopefully I can remove a few ounces there.

I did get it driving around the living room last night (early this morning really) which gave me some needed satisfaction and motivation to keep going. It's been a month since I started!

no progress this week. The mailman brought a new Bomber to my doorstep so I've been wrenching on that all week instead. Lost a bit of motivation on this build but I'll rebound very quickly.

Proline shocks should be here tomorrow. I'll also be updating the front shock mount locations and make it easier for shock removal.

I was also able to shed almost 2 ounces from the cage! Hope there's more places I can shed weight but in all reality it looks like this build will be in the 9lbs, heavy weight bracket. We'll see how it does.
