Cambpell Racing Dragon Slayer

Dang Nick! Nice work man! You should teach me how to tig sometime. I imagine it's much faster than brazing. Probably stronger too? Rigs lookin real good. Got any ideas for the body work?

Thanks Dirk! Good to meet you today. I'm really new to this tig thing myself haha but yeah I'd be willing to let you have a go at it :) I believe it is faster than brazing but brazing is also really strong. Not sure how it compares to good tig welding. The body I'm going to attempt with some thin sheet aluminum first and see how that goes.

Back to work. . .

got some of the mount nuts welded on. I was super intimidated by this part but once I figured out a trick with the magnet and a small piece of flat steel it went pretty smoothly. I've said this once and I'll say it again, I need a new torch! This one is terribly bulky and heavy. Soon. SOon!

ooo lookit! I made one of the bends. I'll do the rest of those too muah ha ha. It's those little details that are so fun with this.

This looks so BA! Really inspiring me to pick up a tig myself. Great work, I can't wait to see the finished project. I'm first in line if you want to duplicate and sell it. ;-)

Thank you for the kind words! And consider yourself first in line if either of those options comes up :) I'm really interested to see how this thing does with the added weight.

Tig has been super fun and I'm very glad I took the plunge on one. Not 2 days after I got it I needed to weld a socket to an oil plug on my friends car in order to change the oil. Made up for its cost right there ;)

Got one of the body panels preliminarily mounted. Thinking some smaller gauge aluminum is needed to make the compound bend shown below.

Made some more progress tonight. Got some thinner aluminum sheet that bent way easier to the back contour of the side panels. Also made up the hood. Kinda doubting the hood can be welded so I might do some JB weld if not. Not sure if even that will be good to use so might have to come up with a different material to use.

Got an Axial Front Locker to. . . you know. . . lock the front diff like the Campbell Racing Dragon Slayer!

Body panel. Wait, what is that you ask? Green rings? Yippers!

One more panel before running out of flange nuts. Maybe the lhs has some . . . Need to get a bunch of these. (traxxas #2744). I wonder if KNK might be able to get something similar? 3.00 per 12 nuts is what I'm paying right now. Not horrible but could be better.

Shaping up well with the panels. Hood looks nice.

Thanks! This is my first attempt. If I do many more of these it might be worth investing in a better set of shears to get cleaner cuts.

Also, looked on KNK's store. Found some 3mm flange nuts and ordered 75 of them muah ha ha ha.

Dude that is freakin' beast! My favorite U4 truck by far. Here is a pic I saved of it. Not sure if this would help out anymore than what you already have.

Thanks for the kind words! That pic does help :)

Round 3 with the hood. I may stick with this one for the time being. Also added the roof scoop. There's no supports up there so any roll over impact will crush it like a tin can. Probably should put something up there. Next up will be the light bar. I looked at Proline's light bar set and it looks pretty nice but at 30.00 it's a bit much to just splurge. I may use the axial light buckets

Got some more stuff done tonight. I want the light bar to be removable so I am attempting to do it the same way that Campbell did. Not turning out so well though. I tried for 2 hours and at least 8 different sets of mounts and screws were lost to the depths of my garage. I might go with a bigger diameter rod, drill it the same but then flatten the bottom to give it a better welding surface.

More pics because we all love pics:

If you can tell, I put in the two top cross bars. It took me a while to find the right pic of the Campbell Dragon Slayer showing these. The orientation is not what you typically think. It'll be a challenge to incorporate the light bar support beams but should be fun. (or maybe not. Depends on how I'm feeling that night when the time comes haha)

Got the seat mounted up. Yes it is a bit high for scale. The trans gets in the way. Also it's a bit far back. Also because of the trans. I'm tempted to cut the front part of the seat out to bring it forward a 1/4" but that's still to be decided. I already made the back come forward more than it did originally.

Looks fantastic. Next time you need to add nuts grab some of these instead McMaster-Carr

Um heck yes! My dad might be doing McMaster order soon. These will be added if so. Thanks for the tip!

The best. So good man.

Thank you. It's been a good motivation to see the response with this so far! I really need to setup a better place to take pictures. Maybe after I get a lap workbench made up.

Had a few minutes after cleaning the garage to put on some scrap matte black vinyl. Looks pretty dang nice! This won't be the final product but it does give a good indication on how the body panels are turning out.

Forgive my bad pictures. I'm still trying to figure out something different that also doesn't take a ton of time to setup each time I need to take a pic.

Awesome build!!

Thanks! I hope to have some more done this weekend. Now that I have the front light to mount!

Vanquish trailing arms got back in stock this morning super early so I ordered a set along with some green omf beadlocks. Muah ha ha!
