bushings vs bearings ?

ok, so obviously bearings are the best usually , but I'm looking at the gear and pin that comes out of the back of the diff and the bearing either side is getting destroyed regularly. would I not be better off using a bushings ? are there any negatives ? heat I guess would be one. my diffs are shimmed and have very little slop, but I'm using 9t brushless in my wraith mudder and I'm getting fed up changing bearings regular.
any suggestions?

Bushings will work or if you want to stick with bearings pick up Dlux big bearing housings which use a stronger and more durable larger bearing.

Surely a bigger bearing wouldn't fit or have I just said something stupid ?

A bigger inner pinion bearing will fix the issue. I have 2 sets of dlux housings in use with zero failures or even loose bearings. I was killing stock sized bearings regularly prior to the switch.

Dlux modifies the inside bearing area to accept a larger bearing, I have had a couple and they help the bearings last much longer. Now in your case being exposed to a low turn motor, lots of speed and muddy water, ( you did say you had a mudder, right?) no bearing is going to last long under those conditions. The Dlux modded housings will let them last longer, but how much longer is impossibe to predict.

Post 45 shows how much bigger the bearing are.

The plastic housing you get from Dlux has the new bearing installed.

My Vanquish axle housing came with the bigger pinion bearing, and I bought ceramic for the outer. Been very durable.

My wraith is practically a submariner. I think the bushings are the only logical solution . Hard bashing and mud and then back underwater. I've recieved them today from the states so will be fitting them.over christmas.

Olite bushings are generally softer then the steel pinion shaft...
but they will still wear a groove in that an cause tolerance issues.

Even more wear, if the bushing is left dirty and not cleaned or re-oiled regularily.

Once a bushing is used instead of a bearing...
it is probable the pinion shaft will no longer have the proper tolerance
needed to fit a bearing with precision.

Granted a hardened steel pinion shaft may fair better.
But that's not the stock steel pinion shaft that I'm aware of.

IMO... using bearings is always better
but the original, smaller pinion bearing may not hold up to the users abuses /or neglect.

The Dlux housings and larger pinion bearings will likely fair better...
and may not fall apart as easily...
but could still wear a groove on the pinion shaft if they become seized
due to lack of maintenance.
And that wear could require that the pinion shaft need replacement
once a groove is worn into the pinion's shaft.

Bottom line... clean and re-oil your bearings on a regular basis.
Especially when running in mud or getting them wet.
Regardless as to which size you run.
A stainless steel bearing may not rust... but it can still seize up from crud.

If yer gonna run big power thru the drive train... and bash on it...
Go with the larger Dlux bearings / pinion housings (axles).
As they will likely be more durable and net a longer consumable life.

I crawl rather slow...
and so the std sized pinion bearings hold up fine to what I do.
But I clean and re-oil them often to extend their consumable life.

Neither bearings nor bushings will last or hold up to neglect forever
If left ignored and abused their consumable life will be less.

Mud and water without a word about bearing maintenance. And you can't keep bearings alive you say? Color me shocked!

There's someone out there selling thrust bearings just for the inside pinnion when my bushing where's out I'm going that route the problem is the bearings can't take the side load the pinnion puts on it with a heavy rig and big power the bearings don't stand a chance
