ax10/wraith crawlin on a budget "sportsman" build

The Kings look a little long for that chassis, but I'm only going by the pic. Even the SCX10 stockers are long for the rear. I had to internally limit mine to keep the ride height decent.

If they aren't too long, you may be able to salvage them with as light a spring you can get that will fit.

i thought it was kind of strange how limited the shocks were given the length (which is why thought they wouldnt work). I dumped out some of the oil and they are fine now.

Can you tell me what makes the scx shocks better vs these metal ones? Is it just the matter of weight?

I personally haven't ran the king shocks because other local guys have bought them for their scalers because of the scale look but didn't like the performance of the shocks.
If you like them awesome run them. I personally would run axial scx10 aluminum shock bodies before the king shock. Just my 2 cents.
No it's not because of weight.
@ the same time some guys wouldn't run scx10 shocks, they would only run traxxas big bore shocks.

And I actually internally limit all my scx10 shocks, big flex don't make a good crawler. Pair those scx10 shocks with some silver MRC springs and the right oil and it should crawl almost anything!

thank you guys for the clarification.

I actually planned on putting some pen springs inside for some forced droop. The only thing i didnt like about the scx shocks was that they felt stressed just sitting there, they would have worked as you all have said im sure.

To be honest, i would be lying if i said the looks played no part in getting them. I know normal comp rigs are all about getting every ounce of performance out of it but im not really shooting for that, just trying to have the fun i used to have with my ax10 again.

Thank you guys for all the input, im not trying to challenge your knowledge/skill when i ask questions about why something wouldnt/doesnt work i just like to know why. Otherwise it just seems like a ford vs chevy debate, people hate things but they dont know why haha.

In other news, i put my spool in the rear axle and didnt take pictures.... big surprise huh?

this is where im leaving it for the night. I masked and did the silver on the body, put on the body posts, put the front shocks on and put the spool in the rear.

and now that i have filled the king shocks with oil and have tried to compress them.... i see what the issue is...... damnit.

BRAND NEW KING SHOCKS FOR SALE! 2 FILLED WITH 30WT AND 2 STILL IN THE PACKAGE!
No worries Dan... Them scale guys will snatch them up quick! :)

Competing or not.. Scale stuff doesn't work for our comp trucks, so well..

I like running the scx shocks cause they are cheap, light, cheap, durable, ummm, did I mention cheap... ;)

Extra o-rings to seal them up, some spring's, losi micro crawler springs(for internal, pen springs are stiff), and you'll have what your looking for..

If you end up comping or not, a car that isn't set up properly and won't crawl good is not going to be fun to drive. We're all here giving good advise trying to save time and money by getting it done right the first time. Will those shocks work? Im sure they will be fine after you limit them and get different springs on it. The reason most guys choose the scx shocks is because they are the correct length, cheap, and the Icon version has a better piston and makes it is a very smooth shock. Traxxas big bores are another great shock. Your two most important things that will make a good crawler are suspension and tires. Now maybe what your doing will work or maybe it won't, thats part of the learning process and you'll have to try it and find out."thumbsup"

Re: Punched Cookie Monster "budget" build

Ok I'll embarrasse myself a bit my comp style rig is very old it's a sw2 from bender, I used his set ups and tuned it a bit and it preforms ok my neighbor has a new carbon fiber chassis and lots of new stuff but he has not taken the time to tune any of it. I asked if he put oil in the shocks he looked puzzled. Long story short the tuning and tips help you out a lot. Your knig shocks if tuned my be fine. One day I'll get one of these chassis I'm liking what I've read and seen so far.

Nah, they might fit this trash can build im working on. Should go great with the vp links that wont work this this build either :ror:

Trash can build I wouldn't say that.... what's wrong with the vp links looks like you have them working... IMO 1/8" uppers are best for adjustability because of clearance for drive shafts. But I'm still running 3/16 uppers (rear) and everything moves freely.

Re: Punched Cookie Monster "budget" build

Are the Vp links what's on it in the last set of pictures? They appear ok.

trying to put the rear drive shaft on but the rear pinion is at a very crazy downward angle. I took the shocks off and tried moving the upper links to the different holes in the chassis to no avail. On top of that the drive shaft is hitting the lower link. Would changing the position on the truss reduce the pinion? I cant visualize in my head how it would but figured i would ask.

Shorten the lower links or make top links longer. Might be as easy as turning rodends in or out a few turns.
