At the risk of sounding like a newbie, what is the differance between the two? And yes I did search. I just picked up a Wheely King and it has a 540 in it. Will any motor that fits, work (with in the ESC limits) or is there a reason for the 550/540 size? I know the dif. between 20% and 30% nitro but this battery crap is wacked:lol: .

What is in a wheely king is a 540. What tmaxx's and the new stampedes have are 550's Does that help. The esc's have limits by turns and size of motor. For example The new pede has a 12turn 550 which that esc can handle if you replace the motor the esc can handle a 15 turn 540 or higher

The number you are referring to (550, 540, 350, etc...) refers to the can size of the motor. 550 motors have a slightly longer can than 540s.

So if it is just the can size, that tells me it is ok to use a 20t 550 in my Wheely king. It has a 27t 540 in it now and the ESC has a 20t limit. That sound right?

If it fits.

The longer can allows more wire to be packed onto the arm, so a 550 develops more torque than a 540, but less speed for a given number of winds. The new Traxxas Titan 12t 550's used in the new Rustys and Pedes compare slightly favorably to the old Stinger 20t motors in terms of speed, and much better for torque. Current draw should be about the same, or slightly more than a sealed 27t 540 (Johnson/Mabuchi).

Most 550's are wound for 12v use and won't produce a whole lot of speed on 7.2v, but the Titan 12t is optimized for 6/7 cell use. That would be a good one for the Wheely King IMHO. Since the Titan has as much wire on its 12 turns as the old Stinger had on its 20 turns (around a shorter arm) you'll be fine.

If it fits, the esc could actually handle below a 20 turn 550 motor but im not sure how low you can go.

I meant if it fits in it's position on the truck since 550s are larger in size than 540s.

550's have larger magnets and longer armatures with more wire than similar wound 540s, therefore 550's will have more torque than 540's of the same wind, but with similar max rpm due to the larger magnetic feild.

The only difference between a 540 and 550 is the length of magnet and armature. If two different length motors spin the same speed, the longer one will have a higher amp draw. More torque means more amps too. Installing a 20t 550 on an esc that will run 20t 540's is a push. Watch the heat carefully and keep it under the manufacture's specs.

LOL!! Easy there Kami

Thats what traxxas says. I would watch the heat and judge from that. I reckon longer motors would turn slower as compared to the same wind 540 motors because of the higher inductance, and thus the amp draw could be lower. Im really tired now, probably giving bad advice. Now that I think of it, longer motors do need lower turns to produce the same amp draw...
