Different size (like 7.5 or 9mm vs. 10mm) arms...

Ya know earlier I actually counted the segments on each because they looked different...now I know why they looked different. They're bigger on the left arm, and smaller on the right :roll:

Same diameter and slot arms. Same comms. Getting close.
 
Most people couldn't report a difference on 3 slot with fat wire vs medium wire when using tiny packs.


Joel is a #1 world class driver though, I would defer to his experience on the matter. He wanted to reduce losses and heat buildup in the arm, so I built them with larger wire than normal. Difference in punch wan't the goal, he is aiming for max efficiency and cares not about adding weight.

the comm on the right looks a C-hair smaller, is that it the comm diameter?
 
Wasn't a planned move, the comm blew up on the matching single and we had a matching double wire in the same batch. Since he wanted them before the holiday I didn't have time to redo another. Both have extremely similar wire fill, I doubt Joel would even be able to feel the difference. But just in case, single wire up front since he likes power on the front more than rear. For snappier dig I would wager.

V5 Motors and another valuable lesson learned

Over the Holiday I assembled my V5 (13t/5 slot/thick can/heavy wind 500 pullers) and they are a wonderful blend of many worlds. Sick low end resolution, smooth start up, good wheel speed, plenty of stall torque, quiet and 2.75 oz lighter for the pair installed than my previous 540 sized pair.





I really like them. Significant improvement over the 540s given that progress is the art of compromise. You can quote me on that.

Now enter the valuable lesson. I have 10 two year old TP480 3s packs that have a lot of cycles on them. They are soft, puffy and don't last very long. I also have a bunch of brand new packs of the same model that are squared off and hard. Upon installing my V5 motors I put in a fully charged old pack. At full throttle the truck was not very fast and the front ESC would shut down after about 20ft full throttle on a sidewalk. So I put in a fully charged new pack. Huge difference. Much faster and no ESC problems no matter how long I kept WOT. With the new pack I could get 12-13 minutes of agressive crawling. I tossed these crap old packs. Lesson: run new packs for clearly better performance.

Mature Ottsix Voodoo Silvers

Lately I've been putting down packs on my original set of reduced silver Voodoo tires. I do not reverse Voodoo tires when I run them. Photos please.

Thanks. As you can see, with unidirectional wear, the pins form flappy little ramps just before they shear completely off. I don't drive on ultra abrasive rock so these tires have continued to perform regardless of their state of wear. The set of silvers I drove at Nats looks brand new compared to these but these still work quite well. Their grip is remarkably smooth with very little hop (the pins fold over reducing hop). I'd actually comp these in this state. They lack that poppy snag of a Rover but their predictablility when traction is found is awesome. This silver compound rocks. I love the way it continues to soften up as is breaks in. I've not tried the blue compound yet but I'm a creature of habit and just haven't gone there. I'll drive the pins off of these to see where they hit the cliff. The inner hanger lugs are still like new...and work. Overall the silver compound still works long after I would have figured it would have dropped off completely. Are these as good as a similarly siped set of newer silvers with only 10 packs on them?... maybe not as far as forward bite goes (rock dependent however) but the overall predictability of handling may be better due to the softer, scuffed, pliable carcass and sidewalls.
