More Gun Stuff

First, I am a very experienced shooter, 21 years i the navy with a tour as Chief Range Officer, NAS Pensacola and 4 years on the Atlantic Fleet Pistol and Rifle teams. So my questions are more detailed as I have a good idea of what I want. I want a 1911 based 45ACP. This will primarily be a target pistol but I will carry in when I am out on our property. I like some stillness, less the slide then the frame but all SS is ok too. I would MUCH prefer a Kimber but the cost is tough. I also like the Springfield Armory ones, S&W, Sig Sauer and .

These are the ones I am considering -

- Smith and Wesson 1911 stainless .45 acp - this gun comes new with rubber grips .i added a pair of rosewood medallion also . complete with 2 mags this is a 8 roung gun with novack low mt combat rear sight. extebded gripsafety/beavertail skel trigger and hammer product no is 108282 lookit up. this gun is unfired. other than factory test. comes with fired case to comply with states who require it.also lock and hard smith case.

So I am thinking the Kimber is the best gun listed but the Sig sounds like a good buy. Al 3 are comfortable and fit and fill like a 1911 is supposed to.

I would love to hear about any experiences you may have had with any of these.

I dont think you can go wrong with any of those, all from reputable companies that are known for great 1911's.

Have you checked out Les Baer or Dan Wesson? Seems like you are buying used, what kind of budget are you working with?

I would say Sig over Kimber but not by much. The Sigs are slightly tighter frame to slide but both are excellent choices.
Smith makes great revolvers...

I have an early Sig and it was tight as hell out of the box. Could barely field strip it to clean and grease it. It's been pretty reliable what few jams I've encountered I'm pretty sure were mag/ammo related. I'm not okay with rails on a 1911 (mine doesn't have it obviously) but that's a personal preference.

Kimber is a love/hate thing.. Because of that I've been hesitant to ever try one. S&W is supposed to be building some nice 1911s these days I like the ones I've handled.

My dad has a Springfield Armory *loaded* SS 1911. It's served him well for years. They are probably the best deal money wise.

From there the sky is the limit.

The other day i was talking to a cousin that has a Kimber and a S&W. He believes the Smith groups tighter than the Kimber. That being said the Kimber may just need the right load to group better.

I have not looked at the Dan Wessons, years ago I had their .357 Pistol Pack. Fun gun and well made. Never seen Les Baer. I am hoping to find new or used under $1k.

Smith makes one of the most accurate semi auto I ever used, it was my competition pistol for abut 4 years. S&W Model 52. I have heard great things about their new stainless series.

I like a laser sight and prefer the picatinny mount method. I had a 1911 that I built with a Springfield frame and match barrel. It was a great gun and one of many I should never have sold. I don't know that I have ever heard anything bad about them.

I have heard that also. Ammo, familiarity with the gun, and age have a lot to do with the accuracy, but S&W doesn't make a bad product. I am buying a MP15/22 in a few weeks. Well as soon as I change my drivers license from Illinois to Mississippi, lol.

Own a Kimber(base model) but not partial, have owned springfield mil-spec and all alloy carry. Didn't sell for any bad reason. Mil-spec was my first, just too plain, alloy was for carry(very accurate) too heavy still. Sig, never heard bad word bout, they make me drool. IMO wouldn't buy auto from S&W ,no offense, own revolvers. Have shot everything under sun through kimber and my reloads thousands of times, never fails. Just my 2 cents..."thumbsup"

The Kimber has an aluminium frame and blue steel slide. Match grade 4" barrel with a machined muzzle that eliminates the need for a bushing, rosewood double diamond Crimson Trace Lasergrips, match grade trigger set and 8 round capacity.

Out of the box it shot great. Where the laser hit, the round hit at about 25 feet.

Great choice, Kimber's are high but worth every penny. Shot the pi$$ out of mine for several years now. Not one bit of trouble.

For sure. Doing a tear down shows the difference in quality by how tight the tolerances are. Looking for a good hollow point round. I used to use Grizzlys, but can't seem to find them today.

You made an excellent choice by going with Kimber. I own several guns and my Kimbers by far are my favorite to shoot. I have three now. I'm looking at there new 9mm
