For upgrades on the Bomber 2.0?

Obvioulsy it'll need a good servo servo saver and steering links.
If I don't get the Incision links I'll grab the SSD links but need to find a set fo Front lower links as I cant seem to find SSD F Lower links (Or do you use the Rear trailing arms in front with the SSD Links?

SO beyond Links and Electonics, I presume Axle tubes?

Are the AR60s prone to snapping? So axle tubes are a needed upgrade?
I do plan on using it as a racer more than a crawler so....

what would you recommend as Must Have upgrades out of the box?

I have a VP Sway bar already.
Thinking Axle tubes.
Links
Servo Saver
Out of the gate.
Servo ASAP

anything else?

This will be my first bomber, but I would think universal axles, links, and a motor/Esc faster than the brushed 35t that come in it should be up there on the priority list…

your gona want to do the big bearing mod on the inside pinion bearing with any kind of speed or power the ar60 will eat that bearing for a snack
other than that the axial ar60 have a tendency to worp when its hot out side so metal axle housing are probably a good idea unless you are running a 35t motor and only use it to crawl
you still need to do the big bearing mod on the metal housings if you go that route
other than that a badass servo is always helpful the servo will take a beating so geting something with replacable gears it will save you money in the long run servo savers are a waist of money on these rigs theres just so much force on them you end up with no steering at all you want to be able to move rocks with that servo lol

This'll be my first bomber as well so any input here is greatly appreciated.

I read in somebody's build thread (don't remember who, was a redirect from Google) that the drive cups on the front half shafts are pretty garbage. You'll probably want to upgrade to universal shafts (as twade mentioned) or CVDs if you plan to put any power into it.

To agree with ferps point, replaceable servo gears >servo saver. You'll want to be able to put all your servos power into turning the wheels, don't waste any torque on a saver that could give in before allowing you to put your tires where you need them.

I didn't know about the axle warping issue. I planned on switching the plastic for metal for low weight anyway. I found these on Amazon AUTOKAY New Black Steel Alloy Front Rear Axle Housing for 1:10 Axial YETI AR60 RR10 RC Car https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NVF7SDL/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_JDSK91136ZJA10P99MPX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have some pre-upgraded axles OTW from another user but I'll have to look into this "big bearing mod"

the big bearing mod opens up the bearing pocket so you can run 13mmx5x4 bearings instead of the 11x5x4 bearings i just use a 1/2" drill bit the bit basicly centers its self just dont drill to deap or you will ruin the axle housing
the other option is a thrust bearing i think super shafty sells them or was it dlux fab i dont remeber i bought some in bulk about 5 years ago i still have about 10 of them lol i stoped using them when instarted doing the big bearing mod
the problem with the thrust washer is they were out and take the pinion shaft with them but thats after about 2 years of constant daily abuse still better than changing bearings out all the time

"the other option is a thrust bearing"

So the mod is just boring out the bearing seat inside the axle housing to fit a bearing with a larger OD right? 13mm rather than 11mm?

Would the thrust bearing be an alternative to the OEM bearings, same size or just a better "big" bearing after the mod?

5x11x4 bushing replaces stock pinion bearing:

https://www.lockeduprc.com/5x11x4-Mini-Loco-Bushings_p_533.html

Great place to look for quality AR60 upgrades:

https://dluxfab.com/Bomber-Yeti-Wraith-XR10-c12405705

Stainless axle reinforcement tubes (less expensive versions of Beef Tubes) are a good idea for plastic housings - these will require a bit of modding to use, but it's not too tricky - the brand I used is no longer available, but these look identical:

https://www.amazon.com/Que-T-Stainless-Steel-Crawler-Wraith/dp/B0833Z7C5G/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1E991SORQPVV5&keywords=ar60+axle+tubes&qid=1649940220&s=toys-and-games&sprefix=ar60%2Ctoys-and-games%2C90&sr=1-3

They used to sell a replacement plastic AR60 housing already setup with the big bearing mod, but no longer. Years ago when Bombers were much more popular I picked up a set for mine. I also have a set of SSD aluminum Diamond AR60 housings with a centered rear diff, waiting for me to get off my ass and build Bomber #2, for which I have had all the parts gathered up eons ago...It has basically zero Axial parts, everything is an upgrade - not even using a cage, will use carbon fiber chassis rails from Xtreme Racing.

What my first Bomber currently looks like - the only stock parts are the cage, skid, rear sway bar, and transmission housing - built from the no longer available kit version:

the 5x11x4 oilite brass bushings are great but they only lasted a few weeks each before they got so sloppy the gears wouldent mesh right i still have a hole packadge of those laying around to but there more of a last resort they mostly get used as spacers
but every once and a while i dont have enuff bearings that size ill use a bushing till i can get more bearings

I'd definitely prefer to stick with bearings over bushings.

I'll be running mine on a HW Axe540 3200kv (3500kv? I don't remember) on 3s. I definitely want something that can take some abuse before failing.

the big bearing mod is kinda risky cause you can ruin the housing with a small slip of the drill but its worth it to not have to tear the axles apart again
one rig the steal locker wore out before the 5x13x4 bearing failed i only replaced the bearing cause it was 5 years old and i was in there already
the thrust bearing last longer than the bushing but still needs maintanannce or it will eat the pinion shaft in a few moths
the bushings last about a month maybe 2 with realy good greese but it dosent eat the pinion shaft

bacause of the risk i dont do the big bearing mods for anyone else when they bring there ar60 axled rig in its usualy that pinion bearing and i do a straight swap with the thrust bearing no complaints yet lol

I used this one purely for racing in a series we had a few years ago. My final setup seemed to be pretty bombproof and simple, only broke stock plastic driveshafts and a few rod ends with this setup which is exactly where you want the weak point.
I found that alum axles were just to heavy and impacts were disastrous

https://dluxfab.com/AR60-Wraith-Truss-U4-version-p29404646

-This was the ultimate truss for racing, I only used it front, also seemed to help with servo life
-Beef tubes f/r axle
-incision universals, (thicker than stock)
-stock plastic knuckles, Also seemed to help with servo life, they don't turn as sharp so can't bottom out servo on impact
-HD gear sets
-aluminum motor plate, incision or axial, rest seemed to slip or come loose
-stock sway bar is simple and doesn't come apart by design, works perfect!

-shocks were the most critical component for a radical working U4 rig
I used the Losi short course shocks that came on the 4x4 Ten-scte
These were by far the smoothest through the woops, rocks and jumps, and didn't leak
took some piston, oils and spring tuning, but in the end i could
Rail through the woops full throttle just like a trophy truck.

The PL powerstroke shocks were also pretty sweet but I fell in love with losi big bores for racing

The secondary shock in the rear was just for looks,

I'll look up what my exact shock setup was later for springs and oil

There's a lot of useful information here already. I'll definitely be referring back here once it's time to start wrenching.

Are there any mod recommendations that can be done without additional parts? My bomber will hopefully arrive Friday but I'll away from home for a few days. Is there any "field" modifications I should look into if I bring it along?

I installed 625zz bearings in my axles. They are 5x16x5. Did it to 3 axles now. And added stainless steel beef tubes, underdrive, vanquish lockers, and vanquish axle shafts (the thicker ones that come in a kit with bearings, locker, and wheel hexes are the way to go). So basically only have the stock plastic housings. Also have mip driveshafts and metal transmission gears. Basically no factory drivetrain parts if you want a beefy reliable setup. I run 4s hv drone racing batteries, one motor is the castle 1415 2400kv, and the other is a puller pro 3500kv. Total gear reduction is about 60:1 and 75:1. Fun reliable trucks once you dump the coin in them.

Fed Ex just dropped a Bomb Er on me.

Picked this up for the Ryft but it was too small, so in the box it went till today.
First upgrade on the bench and the shipping box isn't even open.

Also have a set of PL USA Beadlocks and Pitbul Rock Beast with some CI foams in them waiting for this bad boy to get out of the box so they can be the new shoes.

Installed the Currie Sway Bar. Fit like a glove. Good clearance at the rear cage, but it looked like it would hit, but just enough to clear considering this was made for the Yeti.

Ordered a full set of Stainless tubes for both axles.
Also have a set of Incision Bomber Links and a set of VP Trailing arms for the Yeti (which fit the Bomber) on the way as well.

Then my amain cart is reloaded with other vp goodies. VXDs, Orange VP Knuckles, Black Incision Chubs, Vp Orange lockouts for the rear, an Incision rear spool, fast eddy bearings and a VP servo mount. Then in fleabay I have a set of link/shock mounts and axle trusses, and 2 pair of Treal Diff Bearing retainers.

SMDH....

Few things been being dropped off for when I finally get to run, and then upgrade the Bomber.

SS Axle tubes from Chy-Na
VP Yeti Trailing Arms and Incision Links

Chy-Na Truss'

Treal Diff Bearing Clamps for F and R Axles.

And today VP Rear Lockouts in Orange arrived. Got these off ebay for a 20.00 spot.

Chy-na shock/link mounts are on their way. Cleared Customs today.

Then I have 5 other items in my Amain Cart.
VP F and R VXD axles/locker sets
VP Scale Chubs.
VP Servo Mount
SSD Knuckles in Orange.

10days from chy-na for some cheapy shock mounts.

Got one order at amain to pull the trigger on, then one item on Fleabay (VP Scale Wraith Knuckles unless there is a reason I shouldn't???)
Then the last upgrade I'll be getting for now is ESC/Motor.

Still contemplating keeping it Brushed, but I'm waining.
