what are the + and - of going brushless

It all boils down to how much money you want to spend. A brushed motor will do most everything you need to do with a crawler without dropping the bottom out of your bank acount. Brushless systems seem more compact and do have higher wheelspeed but just how much wheel speed do you need unless you are flinging mud.


The only thing I use brushless in is my aircraft.

I quess that if I was going to go brushless in a landbased vehicle then it would be in a all out basher were speed is everything.
 
Other than a sensored inrunner system, like Novak's, the biggest issue I know of with brushless has always been start up. After the chirps and burps and the wheels start spinning you're okay, and if you can keep them spinning you're making big power. But the lack of the brushed motor smooth start up is what kills the outrunner brushless systems.

while this is true, I have had good luck with huge outrunners and low gearing

get something in the 1200-1500kv range give it 11-14v but the real trick is finding them in the 700-1200 watt range. Lots of power on tap, and usually more mass getting started too.

overall gearing on the rigs I have run sits around 40 or 50:1 instead of my brushed usual 30 or 35:1

lots of power on tap, two and a half hours of runtime off a 3000mAh pack
and decent wheelspeed.

money doesn't really count for as much, because the same people telling you brushless is expensive (novak goat for $180)
are the same ones running mamba maxes and 7t cobalt pullers ($130 and $80)
