Using oversized shims because the world is at an end?

Hi everyone,

A simple, yet I hope not stupid (in appearance) question: I have some 8 mm shims laying around, and a rear differential in my UMG10, that needs shimming, but uses 7 mm ones. There is too much horizontal side-to-side play and the diff does not engage the pinion if it goes all the way to left. It does by hand, but under load, it will rattle and not catch the pinion (aka mesh is way too lose).

Before I try-and-err I wanted to ask: is it wrong and dangerous to use a shim that is 1mm oversize, in that case? The left side is the one behind the ring, so there's a lot of room behind it and nothing that catches it. In front of it, the typical 7 mm open bearing that SCX10.2 and 3 use on the differentials.

I am afraid that there can be something 'mechanical' that I am not considering, once parts start to move and go under stress.

Thanks!

Its probably okay but how does the shim compare to the size of the inner race on the bearing?

If the difference is too big the shim may slip off of half of the inner race. I'm guessing the race is big enough that wont happen but I would recommend checking.

If you wanted to order the correct size shims check Amain, small items typically ship for $2.99.

You are right, the ratio with the inner race of the bearing is important. It would be 0.5 mm radius so I think it will still race on the bearing but I will double check it.

I'll take a look and see how it fares, then report back! Thanks,
