TRAXXAS light kit and non-TRAXXAS ESC?

I've been running a hobbywing xerun axe with the 550 and have the wires soldered to the posts that feed from the battery. i noticed the high and low dimming switch on the light bar doesnt seem to change anything. now, after about 45 minutes of run time, the lights started dimming then getting bright again then dimmer and dimmer and gone. the truck was completely still when this happened for the last part so it couldnt have been moving wire connections. the 3v transformer now reads a steady .56volts with the multimeter. :x

Just wondering if anyone has tried connecting the traxxas light module directly to battery balance port. found sth like this:

similar connector (2s/3s xh balance plug to 2 pin jst adapter) being used in mytrickrc dragon controller.

Curious if it's gonna work for traxxmas light box

As the red power supply plug on the XL5 is directly connected to the battery port of the ESC i'd say the light power supply module is designed to take the same voltage as the XL5, which is 2 or 3S Lipo.
The enable plug on the receiver is spec'd for 6V.

You should drive 2S or 3S Lipo and use the full voltage on the lights, as using only 2S for the lights but 3S for the motor will unbalance the battery, but otherwise you're fine.

I came across the same problem when I replaced my esc/motor.

I ended up ditching the traxxas junction box for the lights & got a RC4WD light controller. Not a bad piece for $30 & you can control the light bar, rock lights & tail/headlights independently.

I second this. The only problem would be there isn’t a Red JST connector to send power the light controller. That was the reason I ended up getting another XL-5hv instead of a HW 1080.
