Is there a reason for all the play in the transmission between fwd and reverse?

Just to make sure it engages easily. There is a relatively easy no slop mod somewhere on this board, but it won't hold up to brushless power very well.

it seems like it would be engaging harder almost spooling up and then slamming in to gear

I don't shift between high-low gears on the fly. Is there any reason that this needs to be done?
