Yes, it’s true. The History channel and BBC Worldwide announced today that work has begun on an American version of TopGear, with US presenters fronting the new show. The first series of ten episodes will air on History next fall (an American-only season not dissimilar to ‘autumn’, we believe), though exact dates are yet to be finalised. It will be hosted by Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood.
Tanner Foust’s name should be familiar to TopGear faithful. He’s a renowned stunt driver (The Bourne Ultimatum, no less) and X-Games rally gold medallist who’s also done the business at Pikes Peak and in international ice racing championships. Not only that, he beat Jenson Button around Wembley Stadium during 2008’s Race of Champions. Rumours he learned everything he knows from Captain Slow remain unconfirmed.
Adam Ferrara (very difficult not to type ‘Ferrari’ there, force of habit) is a renowned petrolhead who ranks the Pagani Zonda F Roadster as his top car. Only, we may assume, because the Hyundai i10 1.2 hasn’t made it to US shores yet. He’s also a stand-up comedian and stars in firefighting drama series Rescue Me.
Rutledge Wood is a race analyst best known for reporting on NASCAR. Think Martin Brundle with a beard, but with no need for the words ‘right turn’ in his lexicon. We’re impressed that he owns a 1953 Plymouth Suburban, and even more impressed that it was given to him by The King himself, Richard Petty. That’s a good friend to have.
It hasn’t been decided yet if the show will air in the UK, but we’ll keep bringing you the details as soon as we can. Watch this space.

I say it is destined to fail for many reasons.
I love me some Top Gear but I love it because of who presents it, where it is made and what they do. Can you imagine an American TV crew and The History Channel letting their 3 presenters ride around Vietnam on Vespas or drive across Africa with shitty cars?

Discuss.

Awesome show... that's going to fail as a US version. Half the entertainment is listening to those dudes slam on American cars, or any car for that matter.

On the original Pilot of the US top gear Adam Carola was one of the hosts, along with Tanner Foust and Some home improvement show host(can't remember his name). I would love to have Adam on the show. He is a huge gear head and loves all cars and will tell it as he see's it.

UK Top Gear isn't afraid to carry on at great length about what a miserable shitbox some miserable shitbox is. I'm sure the US version will be filtered through several layers of attorneys until any amusement value is gone.

I really Really hope they dont stop airing the UK version of the show to help the US version.

I really doubt they will have the nerve to trash on cars like the UK guys, Its going to turn into the Car and Driver TV show. Anyone ever watch it? Me neither:roll:

..and if they DO trash the cars it'll seem like they're TRYING to be like the UK show and it'll suck anyway.

Exactly. The US car shows suck ass for that very reason. They are dry and boring. Even when they cut loose a little bit its weak.

The other thing is that the US version won't have access (or at least not easy access) to all the super cars that are built in Europe.

Also, our version of the Stig will probably test run all the cars on a NASCAR track...:ror:

Now that I have posted this I gotta go watch the AUS version of Top Gear to see what they have done when they present a new verison of it.

Anyone else wanna watch it (or regular Top Gear) they have episodes on tvblinkx.com. YOu have to kill a pop up or two but its good quality.

Shit show.

I dunno... Just finished one of the more recent episodes. It was watchable. Formatting, camera work (while worse, was comparable), guest appearances and everything else was identical to the BBC's version. Just slower and not as exciting. Oh and they had a weird thing about meat trays... It's gotta be hard to do a car show on Australia though. Europe has many countries to pull wacky cars from.

Bottom line... If I wanted to watch Top Gear I'll watch the original. Not some lame copy where the Stig doesn't even know any facts about ducks, even if they are wrong.

the Australian version was written by the u.k topgear
but the delivery was poor, the guys a little gay and to
be honest, utter dross. the young guy who thrashed the
cars was o.k but alot of it just seemed all to "put on"
for my liking.

i would rather watch repeats of everybody loves raymond.

one of our local t.v stations bought the right to televise
top gear instead of just the BBC. a lot of them are repeats.
just watched the Vietnam scooter one for the third time
and it was great

They won't have the balls to trash anything. Even if they rip on the poor Yugo (an easy target (and it sure made an impression, people still make the jokes 20 years after the last one came over here)) the guys at Fiat will whine. "Hey, we design-a dat car, still sell a shit-ton of 'em in Greece. You say we can't design-a da cars? No more Chrysler products for you!" Chrysler pulls its advertising. Network freaks, TG offers a half-assed apology: "What we meant to say is that the 1988 Yugo was a fine car, representing the state of the art in cheap transportation for people with low standards, and not a poo-box in any way, shape or form. We look forward to a free trip to Greece on Fiat's dime to test the 2010 models."

The Chinese are building some really scary shit and they'll probably be on our shores soon. The lawyers will make sure TG gives them a glowing review:

"Our test drive of the 2012 Tsingtao FU9000 was the most fun we've had behind the wheel since we drove the 1988 Yugo GV last week," etc.

TG UK is edgy because the guys doing the show are edgy. TG US will be pseudo-edgy because edgy sells.

yeah, TG-US will not be as good, cause it will more than likely be sponsored by car companies, and we all know on US TV you can't say anything bad about the sponsors:roll:
