The Telluride Project

Haven't posted much about the Telly, but it's alive and kicking, and still running quite well. Took it out for a pack a few weeks ago and it wheels very well. BJoe's got the Telly in my head again, so of course I had to tinker with it. :)

First thing's first.. Usually when crawling I have a battery pack or two that I haven't used up. I've been kicking around the idea of building a truck or rally car of some kind to run down the batteries a bit to storage voltage. Something "all terrain" that I could bash around with in a parking lot or maybe in the woods a bit. I had almost enough spare parts from the Telly/Pede crawlers to build a third truck, so I settled on that platform and started throwing parts at it. I started with a set of 'pede width arms, but after messing with it a bit I decided I wanted 1.9's and a narrower track. So I stole the Bandit arms off the crawler and got to swapping over. Mostly stock parts with front shock towers all around and front TRX shocks, and open diffs for bashing. Not overly scale, but I wanted some real dampening and these are butter smooth.

Modded the C hubs a bit for the 1.9's. Still needs a bit more offset to fully clear and need to clean up a bit, but it'll be no problem.

I had another Ridgerock body laying around, and I love the overall shape so on it went. Cut low and dropped it down as far on the chassis as I could. I like it, it looks mean!

Pretty good suspension travel even with the bandit arms. Full drop out..

And tucked.

The Bandit rear arms have 3d toe-in, and it looks terrible. Hated it on the crawler too, just never got around to changing it. I ordered some of the missing parts and made sure I picked up a set of 0d rear arms.

Since I stole the arms from the crawler, I went back to the original Telluride arms. Wider track is ok, maybe a bit too much but I've got a lot more suspension travel now.

Tons of breakover. Might be sitting a bit tall, I'll fine tune next time I'm out.

Since it shares parts with the Rally, metal CVD's are back on the menu! I only have a front set though, I'll be picking up a set for the rear when funds recover. I'd love some MIP's eventually.

Fast on the left, and slow on the right. :)

Just ordered all the missing parts - just odds and ends, as well as new wheels.

Love the update here!
I wouldn’t be surprised if the MIPs wouldn’t be cheaper in the long run m than what it cost to upgrade to the X-HD parts on mine so it could have the beefier driveshafts on it.

Not sure, but those MIP's are pretty salty. Buy once and forget about them though. :)

I do have a set of the HD driveshafts here, not even sure where I got them. Came on the Rustler I think. I was planning on trimming them down to fit and we'll see how long they last.

Finally got this one buttoned up. A slew of little parts that I was waiting for came in and I quickly got to work..

First thing to fix was the rear toe issue. The chassis has 2d built in, I had 2d on the arms, and apparently 2d on the hubs....so I had about 6 degrees total. Yikes! I ordered the 0d drag slash arms and found some 1.5d hubs in my stash. The rear Slash hubs would have worked from a toe perspective, but they were too tall and the upper link hit the body. The smaller 1.5 hubs (not sure what they are from - 4Tec maybe?) solved all those issues. BUT they are slightly narrower and left a lot of play at the stub axle. I eventually drilled out a few random washers to act as spacers.

Well, that sucks...

New shorter rear hubs, with a large gap between the hex and the hub. Nothing's ever easy... :)

Holmes 550 21t for power. I didn't want anything too high power as my crawler batteries are generally 25-30C packs and I'm a bit concerned about the amp draw. I think I'll be OK with this setup. I geared it fairly low for a lot of low end rip. I found the radio box a bit late, eventually I moved the receiver into it and it should be ready for some wet conditions.

De-stickered, and new wheels and Kyosho Outlaw tires. They are not super sticky, should do fine on a go fast. Love the combo. Front bumper is from the 4x4 Rustler. It's a lot lower that the one the crawler has. I might pick one up for the crawler eventually - it's a lot more compact.

Made a wing mount for a 1/16 TRX wing. It's not too big and looks pretty good on there - it's even carbon printed to match the body

Re-stickered and added a little exhaust pipe for good measure.

Tons of travel, even with the shorter Bandit arms.

I'll be taking it with me to the trails tomorrow, just got my fingers crossed that the rain (sorely needed here in the NE) holds off just long enough to play for a bit.

That the same Holmes 21t 550 I run in my Telluride on a 25c 3s and SCX10 with a 8.4v stick pack, both 5000mAh with TRX plugs and have zero complaints about either one so far. For what we’re doing with the Tellurides, I think it’s the best budget option out there.

Lookin sweet. What kinda wheels are those? They look nice.

Well the parking lot was doing double duty as a car show when I was crawling last weekend, and I didn't want to be spraying rocks around, so I took it for a test run in the backyard when I got home. Turns out I grabbed the wrong radio for the Summit and I had 2 fully charged packs ready and waiting to be beaten into storage mode.

This thing is a freaking blast. It's geared pretty low - in the open spaces of my yard I could definitely use a few more teeth on the pinion but it straight up rips up to top speed. Perfect little trail and parking lot basher. I have the center diff in it, or I'm sure it would wheelie. Everything electronics-wise stayed nice and cool too.

Love the way it leans in turns - not too much, just enough for a nice rally look as it hoons around. It drives almost like an open wheel rally car. It's pretty stable with the bandit arms on it though it will barrel roll on pavement if I crank it. Stay smooth though it and it leans in and hangs on. Kyosho tires are a perfect fit - they slip and slide just enough.

Can really see the center diff working..

Home run! Now back to the crawler.
