The Micro Shark Story + Production Chassis Build

I know this is probably going to sound "unusual" to some. I already have a Capra, so...if I get a Super Rock Rey, and a Bomber, then I'll build myself a Micro Shark. If you can stack it in your brain, you'll understand.

Do you have photos of the truck with both types of body panels T-type and S-Type? Also does your server mount work with a stock truck or only with the microshark?

The servo mount should work, but could potentially bump into the stock ESC tray at full compression. It's pushed back a couple of mm for more clearance up front on the Micro Shark.
 
Ok...aftermarket electronics, take two. I picked up a Castle Sidwinder Micro 2 to try. They can handle much larger motors than what comes in the SCX24 and thus the wiring associated with that is a little bulky. I basically stripped it all down, and rewired with the appropriate micro connectors for the motor and battery. I also reduced the length of the switch wire, and installed a micro JST plug that is compatible with the receiver I am using.

Here it is after the rewire connected to the micro receiver.

The servo lead had to be adapted to the micro plug as well.

All that gets stuffed into the rear compartment of the Micro Shark. It fits with a little room to spare.

The fuel cell/cooler cover fits in it's original location to hide it all. By a stroke of luck, the switch just fits in the gap between the cooler and the rear chassis plate giving easy access and a place to hide it.

Now I can enjoy the smoother throttle with better low end, and using my favorite Sanwa MT-4 TX.

Next I wanted to install a 1/24 ECX Barrage motor into this chassis. I recently started offering a brass motor plate that has the alternate hole pattern the Barrage motor uses.

In the process of getting this motor working I noticed that the output shaft was hitting the spur gear cover. For the Micro Shark it's important to keep the cover in place since the battery rests very close to it. I drilled a 6mm clearance hole where the motor pinion is located to prevent the rubbing...problem solved.

When I was designing the Micro Shark I had intended on being able to use this motor and made sure there was clearance under the seat for it. There was one area that I overlooked, and that was the crossmember that supports the interior. It was necessary to clearance it on one side to be able to fit the motor.

Realizing this, I made a change to the Micro Shark chassis parts to incorporate the clearance. Any purchased after 12/23/19 have the revised crossmember. Folks with older versions can do the clearancing easily with a dremel.

With that detail taken care of the motor gets installed and fits perfectly.

I can say that this motor is a fantastic and inexpensive upgrade for the SCX24. The low end and torque overall is much better, and I think it has more top speed as well.
 
It's a much better motor IMHO. There is lots more torque that makes low speed control much better.
 
If I start with the deadbolt, is this a direct fit chassis, no link changing or anything of that nature? I'm ready to pull the trigger on this. Also, be really cool to have a 1st Gen yota pickup front clip.
 
It was designed when only the deadbolt existed. If you haven't already look through the detailed build guide that is linked on the main frame product page. Not likely that there will be a pickup front clip. You might could modify one from a model kit and make it work though. One guy in Germany scratch built a Jeep front end for his.

Jeff, that motor plate is fantastic. Where can I find it? I don't see it on your Shapeways page.

Thanks, Geoff. I took it out of the store earlier this week. Some folks were reporting an alignment issue with one of the gear cover screws. I made a revision and am waiting on a new test print. I anticipate having it back in the store within a couple of weeks.
