The Chop Shop- 1990 Class 1 Topless K5 Blazer

Had a chance to beat on the K5 a little more this weekend. We held a GTG in Vincennes, IN on Sunday and had a blast. I'm happy with everything but my approach angle, but it is what it is. I wouldn't mind having something different, but I'm not the best at metal work and I don't want to ship my whole truck to someone to have one custom built, so I'll work with it. Either way the Blazer did very well. I've got alot of slop in my driveshafts as of now, and that's my biggest gripe at the moment. I have some nice shiney ones on my bench now, I may look into them instead. The amount of wheels speed I have and my driving habits tends to loosen up these Junfac shafts. Anyways, enough talk. Here are some pics of the GTG.

I've got the K5 in prime shape for the ECSC in August. I have roughly 90ft of course in my back yard that varies in difficulty depending on which angle you approach certain obsticals. This one spot is the exit at the end of my course that I have never been able to make it up...until yesterday. I've been tuning here and there adn I believe I'm ready for the comp. Hope you enjoy the short video, let me know what you think.

So after grenading my HR UD diff gears, a little service was in order for the K5. This set of gears may have had 4-5 runs on them . And people say that HR makes quality parts :lmao:. It's a shame when Stock Axial UD gears are the upgrade to the "upgrade". I also installed some new shoes for the event.

So while I had the axle apart I did something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I modified my stock scx10 axle housing to hold a Wraith diff cover.

Now I can get to my gears to inspect them and check my grease ALOT easier.

After that, I applied some "rust" to the scratched areas from the trail and swapped out my LockedUpRC hubs for my old school RC4WD hubs. Made for a nice change in my opinion. Ater that it got completely torn apart, cleaned and greased in preperation for the 2014 RC4WD ECSC in August at Rose Point Camp Ground in PA. Myself, Chad30W, RockedupRicky and Sczerba will be making the trip together. Can't wait to see these guys again. The most fun I've ever had was with Ricky in Walmart of all places. :lmao: Surely the ban has been lifted by now. Anyway, I got it back together and layed down a HEAVY coat of silicone wax. She's slick as snot.

A busted tail light lense won't affect the driving. Hopefully I won't get pulled over on the trail.

Looks like she is holding up very well!!

Held up extremly well in PA. I'm very happy with it.

Super Sweet Build and Truck! Thanks for Sharing!
Thank you sir.

Man, that is a great truck, and what a climber!!! Sucks about the HR gears.... :/
That grill tho!!!!
Yeah, they suck. I'll not be running them again any time soon. It does a great job of climbing, very happy with the Dinky setup and the Bomb proof outputs from Supershafty.com. The grill came form a guy in Germany lasercuts.de I think it was.

I snapped a few pics from the event in PA. Hope you enjoy.

LockedupRC.com all the way.

Have you guys seen scalerfabs work yet? If not check him out. I got a gift certificate from them at the event and will be working with them to fab a custom front bumper to replace this cow catcher I'm running now. I'm thinking a mesh of these three designs.

Got aproach?!?

Troy is a great guy & does excellent work. He built my rear bumper & the first part of my bed rack. I like the first bumper!

was great seeing you again!
I would go with second picture..
Great seeing you again too Andy! I gave Troy freedom on the bumper. I gave him those three pics and told him to surprise me. As long as it fits decently adn the stinger isn't pointy I'll be happy "thumbsup".

epic chevy build
Thanks "thumbsup"

Troy at Scalerfab will def hook you up with new bumper. Was nice to meet you in PA this past weekend.
Nice meeting you as well.

I'm anxious to see it, shouldn't be much longer now.

So after the trip to PA I started to notice alot more rust on the K5. Must've been the humidity ;-).

The game plan has been there for a while, I was just waiting to get back from the comp to start on it. I'm going to be aging the K5 as it gets ran. I love the way it handles (other than the front bumper I was running) so I believe I'll keep this rig a while. I started by using some steel wool, vinegar and bleach.

I shredded the wool and mixed up the blend. After a night of soaking I had this.

I then drained the vineger and all out and stuck it in another container to make more. Then I used the black slurry that was stuck in the bottom of my jar along with some thinned out flat black/brown and bronze Testors paint to make the final paint. After multiple coats of rust I had this...

A practice piece.

Once it was all said and done I touched up all of the scars and scratches from running the Blazer to complete the look.
