T-maxx trans to electric

This has probably been covered, but I couldn't find a thread with any details.

I have a T-maxx and want to build a crawler. Obviously nitro is not the way to go, so I was wondering what I might need to do to put an electric motor on the nitro trans. Has it been done, what needed to be changed... I assume any clutches need to be done away with as well as the reverse gear. Also, is it necessary to ditch 2nd gear? I'd like to still go a little fast sometimes. Is it possible to have a selectable 2 speed? Thanks for any and all help.

you will need to lock up the trans and remove the reversing gear. mine did not have the second gear in it so i cant say how to remove it, also you will keep the stock slippery clutch, it uses 32 pitch gears). http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showpost.php?p=204015&postcount=22 this is a thread that tells how to mod a tmaxx trans. most people make a custom motor mount or plate that bolts up close to the trans( and that is mounted on the chassis) and were the pinion can reach the spur. i have not found a thread that has a plate that bolts to the trans. for a motor i recommend any lath type motor with about 55 turns, that seems what most people with maxxs are running. good luck

a forward only conversion as well as a single speed conversion would be a must. the FOC will eliminate the internal clutch and the single spped conversion will remove second gear. as far as a selectable 2 speed an e-maxx tranny will fit in a t-maxx chassis and give you a selectable 2 speed as well as a motor plate

Thanks guys.... I'm trying to avoid spending much, so I guess I will just go ahead and modify the T trans and see what I get. Will it be slow enough to crawl setup that way, or is a gear reduction box in order? Also..I do have an old RC-10 laying around...is the stealth a better choice?

(I will try to reduce my noobness....:-P)

if you want to try the rc10 trans go for it. ive tried many trans from ped trans, to an old xxt trans i had, see whaat works for you. i dont mind my tmaxx trans for crawling, its alittle big but it does not affect my CG so i will stick with it for a spell. i dont run gear reduction but slot of guys do. some run a 27 turn with the GD600 and others will run a 55 turn of the GD600, just remmeder that you will get long run times ( about an hour or more) but with the higher turn motors with gear reudction you will break parts alot more easyly( like drive shafts, axle shafts and stuff like that) i think in the futrue i will try a gear reduction but im happy with my setup now. good luck.

Ya, I think I will just play around and see...I hate the idea of dismembering my Maxx trans. I'm starting my build, and I think I'm playing with a solid axle idea that hasn't been done....we shall see how that plays out.

I would definitely start with the rc10.. not much to it, find a way to mount it, and connect driveshafts to it. Not so sure about its strength tho

I have an old Traxxas nitro something I decided to rob the trans from...thought it might be stronger than the rc10 and it has bigger gears and sits lower. Does anyone know if there's spools for the rear drive trannys? Or just good ol' JB weld? Anyone interested in a build thread? I know there's plenty, but mine is pretty much unlike any I've seen...

i dont think they make a spool for a traxxas trans, but im not 100% positive. i use LB weld and it has never broken. post up a few pics of the build, always kool to see other peoples way of doing things.

I don't know about the T-Maxx but I do know that the E-Maxx uses a solid shaft in the bottom of the tranny (outputs) so no need to lock it up any more than it is.
Also, Traxxas does make spools for the diffs, I have them in both front and rear.
