Shane's GMade R1 Rock Buggy Build

I am about to stab a potato in the eye trying to make this damn video. Windows Movie maker sucks. I have used it in the past without problems. Off to find better free software.

I feel your pain fella!

I use a cheap Kodak ZX1 for my vids, comes with it's own editor too, simple, no frills and gets the job done.

Good luck "thumbsup"

Video

Here is a video I put together, at a comp spot, skate park and my back yard. Not the best (ok, the video quality is crappy, you won't have to tell me that), only my second video to piece together as well.

Excuse the tags from the video converter I used. I had several issues with Windows Movie Maker. And finally ended up getting this thing done with Video Spin. I am done with this damn video for now.

Grandpa's, turn down your volume.

Sweet vid. I like the cut crushers better than the rovers. I also think that switching over to a smaller diameter shock would make it more scale if that is the direction you want to go in.

Thanks. If I had a better video camera, I used my kodak point-n-shoot and if I actually paid for video editing software, it would be nicer.

My first post about this R1 when i saw it was the shock diameter. I am just too lazy to find replacements.

The scorpion heli brushless motor should be at my door step when I get home today. Just waiting on the HH adapter plate to get here. I might get froggy and try to fab one up later tonight.

Scorpion Motor

Just got the Scorpion HK-2221-12 V2 Brushless Outrunner (400w, 2580Kv) in today. Will take up to 4S lipo.

The packaging was awesome. Metal case with foam and some stickers. Also includes bullets for ESC wires and 4 mounting screws. This looks like a well put together motor.
HH adapter plate should be in a few days. We'll see how the sidewinder and 3S will power this thing.
Last picture is up with a 540 sized motor.

400W? That's crazy! That's what my Tekin 6.5 is rated at, lol.

Just curious why people don't run the 500 heli motors? Is it the 5mm shaft or the fitment or something else?

I was thinking of going the outrunner route with my R1, still so indecisive about which motor I want to use. Problem is if I buy a scorpion 450 motor It will end up in my T-rex clone and I will need another.

Couple pictures of the HK-2221-12 mounted up.

Couple short vids before the rain started. coming up.

This motor is very nice on a 18T pinion

It's pretty quick with 18t pinion and this 2580kV outrunner. I think it will be the ticket. I had to open up the motor mount slots ever so slightly to get the 18t pinion in there with some adjustment.
This is all the video I could get before some rain moved in. Also, after about 1 minute of running the same front driveshaft yoke popped off. The driveshaft "ears" are the issue, already slipped out of the center pivot ball once. I have some modded Maxx shafts I can put on there.

Was that on 3 or 4s ???!!!!
Great now i have to have one!! Wonder how well it would do in the scaler!

Did you check to see how warm it was getting? My old colbat 500's would get super hot even on 2s lipo.

This motor puts a smile on my face.

ThunderPower 45/90C 850mah 3S with an 19t pinion. I normally run a 2200mah MaxAmps 11.1v lipo but it wasn't fully charged up.
Didn't check the temp. I am pretty sure this motor won't get hot. It's meant for helicopters and up to 4S input. And it started raining right after that video. I will check next run. It would work on a scaler. Elbo runs one with GMade axles on a scaler and said they don't mind the water or elements. So that's a plus. Check out his GMade Greens build.

:ror: I would not exactly call that crawling any more ;-) ;-)

Nice Shane, how is the low end power now?

Serge

You can see in the start of the video there is a little hesitation for a small short period. I was just making it longer for the video.
It's about like my 35T was on a 18t pinion in the same rig. If the pinion count was lowered it would help but NAH!

Here is an old school video of HH testing one out.

I ran this motor setup on 11.1v (TP 45/90C, 850mah) for about 5 minutes of fast bashing with lots of wheelspeed.

I could hold my finger on the motor for about 3 seconds then have to pull it off quickly. What's the rule or temperature for that?

It's geared pretty high with a 18t pinion but the speed is great.

that is the same motor i have in the FJ. it is a great motor with lots of power for its size. ive ran mine for about 5/6 months and it continues to impress. on my 2 speed trans i have run from a 9t to a 18t last winter for 4x4 snow drifting. the FJ has also hit 25 mph(GPS) in second and i could probably hit 30.

i would definitely invest in a temperature gun. i dont trust the finger method. 160 would be my limit for both esc and motor.

also your lipo may not be up to the task. the motor is rated a 38 amps and so is your lipo. with your servo, i would say a bigger lipo would be a good choice.

Yep, I stole your motor choice. From what I am seeing so far, it's a great motor choice.

On the battery, those are my 2.2 comp rig batteries and I don't run them that much in this R1. They burst up to 76A, so I figured it was ok for the few times I will run those batteries. I usually run a 2200mah 11.1v MaxAmps lipo in this (113A).

I might buy a temperture gun in the future.

Sh t dude that is one quick motor. What is your suggestion for some thing brushed, with a bit of wheel speed but still suitable for crawling and able to fit. as you know a standard 540 no chance. I have tried a HH 500 puller but even that gets in the way of the upper link mount. I cant be arsed pulling down my comp shafty to try out the 454 puller that has in it. Especially with a comp on Sunday.

Brushed? that's a tough one, cause by the time you get a big enough pinion on there for the wheel speed you just lost your low end. And if you go with a lower turn motor, you just lost your low end too.

I ran a 27T with a 16t pinion on my axial scaler with some good results. It would crawl decent but wouldn't come out of bound up situtations. I would smoke the motor.

The 35T cheap integy (smaller endbell) on 19T was decent for bashing but not enough topend and then it would not low speed that well either. I got hot too. Like real hot. But yeah, the bigger ended 540's are a no go right now.
If you can get your hands on one of these Scorpion motors, I would do it.

Ripper7777777 is making another skid that moves the trans futher back, so more motors will fit.

that should work awesome. i run a cheap 2200 30c 3s and it does just fine. the mud and muck i run in is usually what kills my lipo.

i also havent ever put this motor on 4s. its been such a beast on 3, i know 4s would definitely break parts. high speed is fun, but cornering is next to impossible in these scale trucks. the width of the Gmade portals has helped my FJ a ton.
