scx10 with associated transmission?

How close are the rc10 and the scx10 transmissions? I killed (stripped) my idler gear. I have several associated gear boxes that I can steal from. I'm waiting on post lady to bring my metal gear set. I'm mainly just looking for a temporary fix.

It will fit as far as the gear size but the bearings are bigger in the axial scx10 transmission. It was a good guess.
 
AE RC10 transmission bearings are SAE and the Axial are metric, the new B5/B5M/T5M series are now metric and I'm in the process of trying to install the B5 top shaft in the Axial transmission. The AE top shaft is 6mm instead of 5mm like the Axial, the only bearings that are 6mm ID and 10mm OD are just 3mm wide. Standard Axial and AE bearing are 4mm wide, so some bushing will have to be made (or you could stack some 6mm shims together). A 6x10x3 bearing will also be a lighter load rating than the 6x12x4 (AE) and 5x10x4 (Axial), so I'm working on adding a third bearing to help compensate for that as well.

Things changed a little with the T4.1, the outdrive bearings switched to metric for the new gear diff, but the idler gear and top shaft were still SAE until the release of the 5 series truck and buggy.

The Axial transmission is a direct copy of AE's 2.60:1 ratio Stealth transmission which is why they look so much a like.
 
I took the idler gear out of my b42 and ran it in a trail run this weekend. I had to use the idler shaft from associated in the axial case it was a bit loose. I put in some thick grease and all was well. I hated to miss the run in such nice weather. My metal gear set from hot racing should be here tomorrow. It is nice to know in a pinch.

You may be thinking of the idler gear and shaft. The idler gear is 10mm ID and shaft is 5mm OD (it's actually the SC10 4x4 idler shaft). It use the 5x10x4mm bearings (#25237), making the idler gear a direct fit to the Axial transmission. But the top shaft is 6mm dia. and spins on AE #25238 6x12x4mm bearings. So the 6x10x3mm and 6mm spacers/shims are needed for the swap unless I can find some 6x10x4mm bearings that aren't $23 a piece (their full ceramic though).

The V2 and VTS clutches and their matching spur gears are my main reasons for attempting this conversion, I have a lot of AE spur gears in 48p and 32p that will fit the SCX10 and Wraith if the top shaft will work. All total would be 7 trucks and one buggy running the same gears and clutches.

I've also considered cutting the Axial top shaft down to fit the AE clutches, but I would prefer the B5/B5M shaft to work so others who might be interested can convert without the machine work.
 
That was what I was think when I started taking the associated gear box apart. Thank you for the additional information. I haven't bought a b5m yet. Our local track closed and now I have loads of associated parts.

Nope, T5M has a different topshaft. AE says on their website 5x10 bearings are required to use the V2 topshaft.

Edit: Apparently its the same topshaft from the soon to be released B5M 3 gear transmission.

Looks like that alu. top shaft was originally designed for the optional 3-gear transmission. Didn't think to look at it, just looked through the B5/B5M kit manuals for reference and no T5M manual available yet so I don't know what's in it. Looks like they may be changing the transmissions in the 5-series line though. With the T5M page showing the anodized top shaft in a 4-gear transmission and the shaft being labeled "V2" those may be indicators of a design change.

Not sure I want an aluminum top shaft in a crawler, but I may see if the V2 can be made to work. The shoulder on the slipper side will have to be removed though. It's not a critical spot so it won't have to be machined to an exact 5mm but still needs to be small enough to get a 5mm bearing past it.
 
That was a hell of a lot easier than it should have been, the 6mm top shaft dropped in with one 6x10x3 and one 6x10x2.5mm bearing and some 6mm axle shims from Calandra Racing. I Also reamed the motor plate to accept a flanged 6x12x4 bearing. The AE idler gear was too big and the diff ball holes in the AE diff/bottom gear did not line up with the screws in the Axial outdrive shafts. So I didn't use either of them.

I'll have some pictures soon.

Use any 48 pitch spur gear for the B4/T4/SC10 (2wd) and newer trucks and buggies, DO NOT use the ProLite or ProSC 4x4 spur gears, they don't fit the slipper pads.

If you want to add the VTS clutch and 32 pitch spur gears seen in the pictures:

Any updates on this AE slipper conversion? I'm building a wraith trans from scratch with dig and I don't like the Axial old or new style slipper clutch. I have an all steel robinson clutch with steel spur on another rig and while the clutch works awesome and is easy to adjust, the whole unit is rather heavy so I'm looking for other options.

I'm a little concerned about a 2.5mm wide bearing, but I'm hoping this goes on the side with the "extra" 6x12 bearing.

The v2 AE slippers are fairly inexpensive on Ebay take-aparts from SC10's. Plus I as already have an RC10 and a Stampede running the v2 slipper so I know they are light and work well.
