SCX10 Tow Truck

Who has made a tow truck out of the SCX10? I am looking for build ideas and inspiration.

There are also multiple options from Chinese sellers on eBay that you could check out - just use the search string "rc tow truck 1/10"...

They run from around $20 up to $65, some with winches included. They even have one that will mount to a Capra!

Not saying you should buy rather than build, but there are lots of different types to look at and get ideas of how they're setup.

Hah - $8.39 when I checked, offering me a huge 79% discount to try to get me to buy from them again - it's been a couple years, not gonna do it!

Awesome, exactly what I am looking for!!!!

I have decided to use a tow truck boom from Amazon. Sadly, it isn't scheduled for delivery until the end of next week.

I have mocked up a flatbed for my SCX10, and making a couple of tweeks to the design, however, I have to wait until the boom arrives before I can any more significant progress.

The red PLA makes the thing look hideous, the final version of it will be printed in black or gun-metal gray. I use a lighter color PLA for mock ups so I can make notes on the mock with sharpie.

IERC has a similar style metal flat bed for $40 if you can find one in stock. Fits the power wagon cab nicely.

Edit (option 2)

I saw that one, looks sharp. Sadly, its status shows it being out of stock. If my printed version goes to boom-boom, I will see if I can pick one of those up.

Edited my previous, there's another option in stock. This is the one I was thinking about when I first commented. Had one on an Scx10 tow project before it turned into a Scottsdale hard body.

Well, other than some turning, it is ready to go.

The wiring isn't as clean as I would like it. On the right side I have a Traxxas water-resistant RX box, on the left side I have the light wiring (including the on/off relay for the bed light), held down by a stick pad mount. It works ok, but it looks a bit sloppy. If it bugs me enough I will design and print a box to house the wiring.

Why build it, other an because I wanted a wrecker? One of our local clubs has themed events and comps, and one they are starting in March is called "Wrecker Wars" with crawler-based wreckers. I have no idea how it will do, but I think it is a good starting point, and something to build off of.

The Cab:
The cab is connected with body posts in the front, and the back is held on to the E-tray with magnets.

Drive Train:
• Stock OG AX10 transmission and center skid.
• Incision metal drivelines
• Amazon aluminum TRX4-style portals

Rolling:
• Amazon Beadlocks
• RC4WD Baja Claw 1.9 tires

Chassis:
• Stock AX10 chassis
• Injora 90mm shocks with 40wt.

Bed:
• 3D printed with Bambu PLA
• Amazon winch boom and 35kg servo which
I like how the bed came out in both design and the excellent job my P1S did; and, for being unfinished and unpainted, it looks good. It took about eight hours to print with 50% gyroid infill. I do wish I would have dropped some more 3mm holes into back of the bed to give more mounting options for more gear.
I designed a mounting bracket that slides into the frame, and bolter on with the same bolts that attach the shock hoops.

Electronics
• Traxxas XL5HV ESC
• HW1060 ESC (front winch)
• 35kg steering servo
• Castle 10A BEC set at 7VDC
• Radiomaster MT12 radio and 5-ch RX (ELRS)
