I needed some small, slim bungees for the cover I made for my boat ("non-crawler" section ;-)) and I just wasn't happy with what I could find out there. So I got to thinking how the 1:1s are made and what would make a "scale" one. I got an idea and grabbed this arsenal.

I've done electrical work for years (still do some) and I have a bag of the small orange wire-nuts, and I remembered seeing the little wire coil inside, and so I took the heavy cutters and split one open and got the cone-spring out...

then I clipped off a few rings to get to the right size, both for the hook and the elastic cord. (I took off 1 ring from the small end and 4 or 5 from the big end) and with a bit of "artistic" bending, you end up with a mini hook and coil...

then I used some small, round elastic cord fed thru each collar (getting it into the small-end-first is a bear), tied it off at length...

and "presto" you have what I think is a more true-to-"scale" bungees. Here are a couple next to one that I bought on ebay.

Here is one installed on my boat cover.

and one that I painted the hooks black, although I like the stainless look for my boat.

The bigger ones were fine to use as hold-downs for the boat ('til I make something better) but I wanted something smaller ... and this is what I came up with. 8)
Hope it's helpful, I know there are other ways to make them too.

A little follow-up...
I was waiting for my truck batt's to charge, and I have some elastic cord that's about twice as thick, so I tried the same trick with the red wire-nuts.... jackpot again. :)

They're a bit heavier, but still less than 1/2 the size of the ebay one. My small one is about 1mm, the medium is 2mm, and the large (ebay) one is 4mm. :)

Oh, and be Careful! They will bite if you pull too hard on them. :(

Thanks for looking.

After I first saw this thread I spent a rainy day making bungees. Made about 20. Big "thumbsup""thumbsup" to dr.frank for the idea.

Dude these are simply amazing. I'm bumping this because everyone should see this!

Thanks gentlemen, 8) I come up with crazy ideas all the time, some are just a little better than others.
Glad you like 'em. ;-)

I was looking for this thread the other day. Should've marked it the first time. Lesson learned. Thanks for the write-up. These are the best bungees I've seen.
