Project: ROCKSTAR!! Resurecting the build after a 4yr break!

Now the time has come to start a new project and as you can tell from the title, this one is to be a Silverado truggy sitting on a set of 2.2s. Normally I am a small tire guy, but with all the cool looking TTC trucks I have been drooling over lately, as well as the fact that a lot of people around this area run 2.2s, I decided it was time for me to have one as well.

This truck is being built out of all most all used/second hand/spare parts. Many of these parts I have been collecting for a while now, they have just been waiting for the right project to come along.
Now on to the project.
First up, the body of choice. This a Silverado body I picked up off of a friend of mine in a trade. As you can tell from the pic, the bed is made wrong for a standard cab truck, it is a quad cab bed. This is why I decided to truggy it.

Next up is the trans. I have had this thing laying around for about 4 or 5 years now and it is time to either sell it or to use. I decided to use it. It is a Emaxx 2 speed mounted to a set of Thunder Tech TXT-1 mounts. Though it has Speed gems now, they will be replaced by either a set of 55s or more than likely a pair of 35s will find a home there.
aIMG_9812.jpg

Next up is the rims and tires. These are the reason the truck is called Project Rockstar. A set of RC4WD super narrow Rockstar rims in black with purple rings and wrapped in a set of Crazy Krawler tires. I just recently got these from MDCrawler72 (on scale4x4rc.us) and they are the perfect rim I have been looking for to go with this build.

And last but not least a pile of all the parts so far.
aIMG_9806.jpg

Parts list so far.
Silverado hard body
TLT axles
Traxxas links
big bore shocks
K2-4 chassis
EVX ESC
2.2 Rockstar beadlocks
Crazy Krawler tires
E-Maxx 2 speed
Please stay tuned for more.

Sweet, gonna keep an eye on this one, 2 35 turns on 3 cell should be good!

Thanks. Sadly I have yet to make the move to lipos, but it will have a pair of standard 6 cell packs under the body. 8)

UPDATE
It is almost a roller. I have the tranny mounted and the axles secured. The front shock mounts are just for mock up. I am trying to decide if I want to go droop or 50/50. I am trying to avoid having it set too high to look right. I have also cut down the chassis, but I still need to trim it some more. I just didn't want to go too short and not leave enough to mount the bed work too. Well that it for now, I will let the pictures show the progress and I will go get back to work on it. :)

it's another one for team chevy"thumbsup"

"thumbsup"8)

that thing is gonna be one fat piggy with that tranny and motors plus a couple stick packs

yup, it sure is gonna be. lol today I got to thinking of going with a pair of 2/3A packs or maybe going ahead and making the jump to lipos, but that means I will have to get the wife to ok buying a new charger. hmmmm....

what is that body from?

Not sure, I got it in a trade and there are no markings on it. Sorry. :(

those rims are bad ass!!

I LOVE these rims!!!

UPDATE

I got the shock mounts made up. They are nothing pretty, but are functional. I still need to clean up the edges a little bit.

I also went ahead and cut off the front bumper and opened up the wheel wells a little. The body is just sitting on the chassis in the pics below, I am trying to figure out how high I want the body. Also I realized that I do not like the way it looks with the 12 inch wheel base. I am going to pick up some all thread in the morning and add about 2.5" to the wheel base with some longer rear links. I think that will even out the look of the truck.

mmmm, girl scout cookies...

Did you say 14.5" wb?! That's gonna be a big monster!

Girl scout cookies rock!!!!

I am not sure exactly what the wheelbase will end up being, but I am going to start at 14.5". Right now at 12" the rear just looks to close to the cab to me. It makes it look even closer because the cab is a little bigger that 1/10.

I LIKE this project and will be watching this build too'

This I LIKE' and I got a shit' load of old Emaxx' part's and stuff laying around here to use if I'd wish to throw myself a Truggy together similar to this one your building at this time as well' - I love those rim's too' - I was thinking of just making Super's out of them big ass' Emaxx' tranny's too' for their awfull heavy to be throwing into a 2.2' with twin motor's as well' whoa' - just me two cent's - I'm watching this and want to see how twin motor's are going to work for you in this rig' for I'm just going to use a single motor on my two Emaxx' tranny's - By the way I got a 6x6' going together over here using alot of my own emaxx' stuff to fab' it all up with as well' - Scoot'er

yeah, i went back and looked at the pics again and it does look like the rear could use a stretch. Wheels are def too close to the back of the cab.

That truck is NICE!!! I like it, them shock mounts are differeant tho... may concider some steel ones if your gona go that route. I just snapped mine on my E-maxx. upgradeing to steel ones.

I think they will hold up ok. I have used the same type on 3 scalers sofar with any problems, besides what else am I going to do with all these tlt chassis plates? lol Also the extra hole will have a brace mounted to it to help stiffen them up.

I now have the wheel base and ride height worked out. The wb is set at 13.5" and the ride height is going to be set at just a little over 3.5". Also the suspension is no longer full droop. It is about 65/45 on the front now. I am using white front pede springs on maxx big bores for the front. Rear shocks are still undecided though.

I have also now started on the tube work. The main frame of the bed is made from 1/4 tube and the supports are going to be 3/16th. I still have a lot of work to do on the bed, but this kinda gives an idea of where it is headed.

Well that it for now, but more updates should be coming soon. 8)

I'm liking this Build' even more - Carry on there bro'

hey,...that's starting to look good brotha' - with the clean' flowing tube work your doing to it now' - I'll be watching ya' and this build till the end too' - Scoot'er.

Lookin' good!!!

What's gonna be the deciding factor on the motors you choose?

On mine I wanna run 2 45t motors for the extra torque since its gonna be just under 10lbs.

I was thinking 2 55t's but I wanna have a little more wheelspeed.

Thanks guys!!

Well, there has been a change in the motor dept. After some thinking and some advice I got from Grizzly, I am going to be going with a single motor. I am going to go with either a 7t or 10t puller. I want the combo of torque and wheel speed and if I went with the 55s I would have lost wheel speed and the 35s would have cost me torque. This way I get the best of both worlds. 8)"thumbsup"

UPDATE!!
I have more of the tube bed finished. This is just the basic shape completed and I have the tube to chassis mounts completed. I still have bracing, light mounts, plate mount, and shock mounts left to add.
dIMG_9937.jpg

Shock mount location. For the shocks I decided to go with Savage shocks with soft springs.

Front cage mount.

Thanks for looking.

Good to see you' going with just one motor' - two would be kind'a' top heavy' - I'd like to find myself a tranny mount like that one yuo got on this here build to use for one of my two Emaxx' tranny's to start my own Truggy' build -That you have gotten me thingking of now LoL' - For after seeing this one' - that your doing up at this time' - Just some Awesome' tube work your doing on this build brotha'- I'll be watching ya' - Carry on' -Scoot'er.

Glad I got you thinking of building one. I look forward to your build thread. "thumbsup"

UPDATE

With finals coming up my time to work on this truck has been limited, but I got a little more finished. I now have the rear shocks mounts made. The rear shocks are currently set at half droop and it has a bit too much flex. I plan to limit the droop by about 10% and that should make it about right. I still have a couple more braces to add and I still need to make a mount for the fuel cell/esc box. Anyways, here are the pics.

Side view, I think the ride height is about perfect.

Been a while, but I have an update.

The rear tube work is finished, though I still need to clean up the joints. I have added all the braces and a set of mounts to make a small shelf to hold the fuel cell and a couple of small items. I have also made a set of battery mounts and started on the front bumper. To hold the body on I have finished up the front body mounts. They are rather simple, but effective. Thanks for looking.

Now the pics. :)

The rear shot.

hmmmm...... Wonder what this is for?

With batts in place. Once finished there will be a o-ring that goes around the batt to hold it in.
