Pilot_MM's Build: A noob endeavor

These are with them all the way pulled in. It's not a whole lot but it certainly helped. The front has since been replaced with a different bumper after snapping it off.

Small world, I work for Delta Engineering. I did some part inspection work on your guys' new A340 in Louisiana and at your Vegas facility. I'm guessing you fly for them judging by your name?

Certainly, there's a lot of good crawling over here. These are the SSD steel wheels. Pretty cheap but they look great and are built really well.

Maiden trail run report!

First off I had a grin ear to ear. I meet up with the local crawler guys this morning and brought my son and nephew along with me. We started crawling and there were some wet spots with water crossings and nearly 200-300 yards in I lost a bead on my tire. The glue came loose. I was annoyed. Luckily I brought some extra CA with me and ran back to the car to get it. Before I made it I ran into another one of the guys from our group that had shown up a little late. He asked me what was going on and I explained and he offered to loan me his wheels off his other rig. They were shoed with Pitbull Growlers. A few minutes later I was back on the trail. I had an amazing time! I also noticed that the more I ran the rig the better the flex was getting! What was going on here?

After about 2-3 hours it was time for me to take my kids to lunch so we split. I begrudgingly gave the wheels and tires back and was on my way. When I got home broke down my truck to clean the inside and outside of the body. Also I removed the trailer hitch; while it looks awesome it got hung up on EVERYTHING. As I was re-gluing my tire back on and checking the security of the others I noticed what looked like a grease spot on the bottom of my passenger side rear axel. Upon further inspection I realized I have also suffered from the dreaded shock leak. I lost about 1/5 (maybe less, it looked like 5mm worth) or so of the fluid and that was why I was getting more flex out of the frame. I refilled the shock and noticed that the rest of the shocks had also leaked. Bummer. I guess a shock upgrade will be on my list of future upgrades.

It was pretty sweet making it up things that some of the other guys couldn't only because I was running my Tekin on 3S. It has incredible down low torque (35T) but great wheel speed to get me moving up some of the slick stuff. I was shocked how well it did in the wet and sandy conditions of our crawl spot after the rains. I think once I find a good wheel/tire combo I will be set for comps. The first one I can attend is next Saturday so we will see how much I can run before then.

3S is the only way to go! Unless you had the shocks overfilled, the leak shouldnt have given you any more flex.

There are cheap things you can do to minimize the leaks like x rings, teflon tape, green slime. Traxxas big bores are cheap and supposedly dont leak. My only issue with them is that they dont have a threaded body. I have a set of Pro Line shocks and they leak...My Gmade shocks are leak very little, even after several months but they are an oddball size so not many spring rates to choose from.

I have tried many different tires and I'm liking my Hyraxes the best right now. I got to take my comp rig on another run last weekend (with better spring setup) and was very impressed with them.
 
Just an update, I did some maintenance on my Rig today. I am still working out names; my wife and I name our vehicles but my car/truck has always been a male name so this is a little difficult for me with the Xj. I am thinking Xavier.

Anyways I spent some time messaging Col_Sanders and I have come to the conclusion I over-serviced the shocks. I pulled them apart and reset them and really think I put too much oil in them initially. I put it back together, re-glued my tire and found a few 3S 4000mAh in my lipo bag that I am going to try. Preliminary runs show that I have much more articulation (in the neighborhood of 1.5 inches more) than when I first put it together. I also moved the rear shocks to the forward mounting holes.

In the dark (after the kids have gone to bed) with the bigger battery I noticed the front is a bit less bouncy but I guess that goes without saying. The 4000mAh battery is HUGE compared to my 2200's. I will escape tomorrow and take it for another test run by my house and report further.

The shocks have such a small bore what I did was I did the standard routine of filling it up half wag and get all bubbles from under the piston and then fill it up 3/4 of the way and slowly bring up shock shaft until 4mm from top of the stroke and stop, now put some more fluid on it until it is just on top of the piston, now put on the cap leaving the shock shaft up. The reason you leave the shaft up when you tighten the cap is because the shaft takes up space In the body and if you fill it up at the bottom and put on the cap you will keep blowing out your seals and have poor dampening.

This is exactly what I did wrong. The instructions are not really clear on how to do that and I probably should have watch a youtube video on how to set them up. I have since set them up in a similar method you mentioned.

It is turning out to be one heck of a rig. I will be using your post and this one when I start with mine. I'm hooked. Can't wait!

I also like the plasti dip idea to waterproof the ESC. I saw a youtube video RC Sparks did that explained this, as well as the receiver and servo. I might opt for that and hopefully save a little money and just waterproof the components myself.
 
Small update.

I got fed up with the damn glue on wheels so I ordered some cheap metal bead lock wheels. The Gmade Steelies. I also installed the onetoomanyRC headlights. It really rounds it out for a basic build. The steelies look pretty good too! Here is a video from today.

More updates:

You all saw my video from Monday that was my first major crawling day. Well I noticed some torque twist that was originating from the right rear so I pulled my rig apart Wednesday and took a look at the rear shocks. They were empty. I decided to take matter in my own hands and try something different. I used a little Silicone Grease on the the top o-ring and the bottom o-ring and put a little teflon tape on the threads. My hope was it would at least slow the leaking.


I had the grease from a rain catching barrel project I had a while back.


Today I went out with Col_Sanders for a quick rundown and had an epic fall. The rig fell off the side of a cliff, bounced once and landed on all fours. I thought for sure I would have broke something or at the very least blew out a shock. I squeezed the throttle and we had movement! I turned left and right and we had steering! To scale it would probably have been over a 300' drop! LOL. I finished the day and had to bail early and Sanders loaned me a set of green springs for the rear. I am determined to get the rear end planted.

When I got home I gave it a very thorough review and noticed that the rear shocks had not leaked at all. Even with the fall. I was impressed and decided to do the front shocks the same way I set up the rears. I also put the green springs in. After running through the yard a bit I felt like the rear was too stiff and noticed that my adjusters where turned way down. I raised them up a bit and bashed around the yard some more. It felt.... better. The ass was planted better and I was taking lines I hadn't before in the yard rocks. We will see Sunday if it really made any difference. And now for some "glamor shots"

Not difficult at all if you know what your doing. The first one I mounted I didn't get the bead set right. By the end of the second one it was a piece of cake. The key is to put the metal sleeve inside the tire first then mount the front and back plate. I will say this, the metal hex driver broke on me by the third wheel. Luckily they send you one per package so I had another. So be careful driving the nuts in, maybe I should have used lock-tight?

I ordered the Wertymade Boar and Stout front and rear bumpers. It looks like they not an easy direct replacement :???: I am not sure when they will be here but I will update after I get them installed.

The front isn't too bad, it's just difficult getting the nuts on the inside of the frame so I ended up making two little threaded crossmembers to screw into. And on the rear, I'm getting ready to make a little aluminum plate to line the inside of the frame with to bolt the bumper to. As it sits now, the bumper can't physically slide back far enough.

Ok so my Wertymade stuff showed up today. As well as my Pit Bull A/T tires. I want to make this into a class 1 rig for comps for next season. I was really surprised about how the tires looked. They are not that much shorter but they are definitely narrower.

Here you can see how much more narrow they are. They look narrow enough to where I can probably put the TF LWB hardbody on the chassis and they wont stick out too much. Now I am not sure if I want to go with the XJ hard body or the Hilux.

I guess these look more scale as a daily driver. I am guessing these are closer to 39-40" tires in terms of looks.

Now as for the bumpers. I am not sure if maybe I installed them wrong or if maybe he has changed his design just a little bit to make an easier install. But after looking at them for a minute I came up with a less elegant solution. I don't have any aluminum laying around and machining is not in my background but this is what I did.

I put the screw in the last hole in the mounting plate and screwed it into the existing cross member. It fit and is tight enough that its not moving. I plan on running it tomorrow to see how it works.

I might need to trim the body just a bit where they spacers are so it sits perfect every time but I thought it looked really good! If you don't set the body on just right it kind of bunches up, thats why I suggest trimming just a bit.

The front was about the same (I forgot to take a photo after I installed it with the body off). I mounted it jus the same as the rear but tucked it in one hole since I don't have a winch yet. Bracket around the chassis frame and into the existing cross members. I think it looks good!

Ready for tomorrow!

Using a piece of cardboard as a guide I noticed it has a much nicer approach angle. I cant wait to try it out tomorrow. I will post action shots tomorrow and maybe try to shoot a little video.
