OutRunner brushless motors?

Status
Not open for further replies.
There may be an issue with Quarks and outrunners. ESC's designed for inrunners and speed sometimes have issues with the outrunners (saturation?)

I'm not saying there IS a problem, but there could be a compatibility issue. I may have gotten lucky with the Mamba, because Castle derived it from an airplane ESC.

the quark runs fine with outrunners , there are 2 settings one for outrunner and more then 6pole innrunner and one for 2 or 4pole innrunner
the 33A version has a 3A bec the 22A only the 1.5A bec

Guts!

Oddly enough, this hasn't been posted yet. For those unfamiliar, this is what an outrunner looks like on the inside, and why they're so torquey. Every time the field reverses, the can only has to rotate 1/12 of a turn, instead of half a turn like a brushed motor or a 2-pole inrunner. I'm still amazed at how punchy these little bastards are. This is an E-Flite Park 400.

Pictured is the last motor plate from my personal stash. No more left.

the can rotates slower
you have 12 stator poles
and 14 on your rotor

Now THAT is really helpful. Nicely done. I almost understand it now

I hope Blazed doesn't see that last graphic, or he'll be sitting here for a week :flipoff:

Well, the brains fell outta my Mamba. There seems to be a short either in the switch itself or the connection to the PCB is loose. I don't wanna cut off the shrink wrap because I don't wanna void any sort of warranty this thing might have.

In addition, I think I need a old priest and a young priest and some holy water. This thing seems to be possessed by something. It's beeping in tongues and being generally uncooperative.

When I can get the switch to work, the thing does it's normal startup beeps and then the thing just blinks it's little yellow, green, and red lights all together (no beeping). I don't know what's going on, so I ordered a Quark from BPP along with a new Mamba. I'm gonna put a call in to Castle and see what they say. Unless any of you have a degee in Theology and know what the hell is wrong with the Mamba?

And here's something that may have potentially screwed it up. I hooked up the motor wires backwards to my E-flite outrunner. I'm not sure if that's a problem or not. I hooked the "neutral" wire up like normal but switched the red and black to get the motor to turn in the right direction. Is that bad?

The only thing that happens if you hook up a brushless motor "wrong" is that it'll spin the wrong way. Just swap any two wires to reverse the rotation. They really don't care which wire is which.

As far as the Mamba goes, it sounds like a bad switch. Castle will probably take care of it for you, they're very good about supporting their products.

Let us know how the Quark does.

Looking for outrunners try checking the sale items at Hobby-Lobby

I am using the 2212/26 gold with the Mamba ESC. Same problem as gone_wheelin, not enough power going to my servo's(hs-645 front, and 590m rear).

I removed the HS645, placed the 590M to the front, and locked the rear steer. Now I have no stall when I go full left or right steer. Still debating if I should go with a separate battery pack, or picking up an BEC Voltage Regulator. I am using a 3cell 2000 or 2100 Mah Lipo (12.5 Volt fully charged) I would like to have 4ws.

The only drawback is the voltage input. Mostly everyone will run a 6-8 cell pack or 2s lipo. If you are like me and have some 3s or 3 cell lipo pack I found 2 regulators.

AXI on sale at Hobby-Lobby, $41 for 2212/26 silver, $59 for the gold.

It NEVER fails! I just bought a Gold for $75 bucks at the LHS! Which WAS a good deal at the time (considering shipping). Oh well. Nobody ever said this hobby was cheap. I think a crack habit is probably cheaper.

For a regulator, it seems to me that the one to go with would be the MPI one. For the same price as the Novak, you get 3 times the BEC. Plus, I would think 3 amps would be barely enough for two servos. But Micro and JRH would know better than I.

try R/C helis if you think crawlers are expensive.... :flipoff:
its a shame  i have invested about 800 in my heli and the weather is to bad to fly
p.s. for WRXronald, i have a nice motor for mid size helis in the fs section ;-)

yes....

i saw it.....

i'm into the smaller birds--- as the size of the heli grows, the cost to fly it grows exponentially. from replacment parts to electronics to batteries...

i have easily $1700 into my Trex SE. and then in supporting tools/equip/parts/batteries etc the mountain of money i've dropped goes way up from there.

don't get me wrong i enjoy helis and still fly regularly... but the rc crawlers are a bit less expensive and a lot harder to break, and therefore ALOT less stressful when it comes to 'enjoying' them.

i look at it like this... you wanna chill out and enjoy a nice afternoon relaxing... take your crawler to the rock hill and thrash up some rocks.

you want a pure nail-biting adrenlin rush that will leave your hands trembling... take your $2000 helicopter (that you just spent 8hrs fiddling with and tweaking to get it flying just right) out to the air field and fly it up 200ft in the air... and try to bring it back all in 1 piece. ;-)

I forgot to add where to get ESC's. Mostly Quark's, Mamba can be found almost anywhere Castle is sold.
Manufactory for Quark: http://www.sky-technology.net/home.htm

My T-REX Heli was sitting on my work bench, until the family of Tamiya Crawlers moved in.
I may have to sell the heli, I think I rather rebuild a crawler then rebuild a heli after a crash.

Here is a story I did for Rcgroups. Heli's can be fun but sometimes dangerous.
