Official MTB / Mountain Biking Chit Chat

Heres mine. I dumped way to much money into this thing back in the day. Still have this and need to get back on it and ride soon.

2006 devinci wilson. The bike weighs in at 38lbs which is pretty light for what it is. This bike is all decked out. Custom wheelset with double butted spokes and allow nipples and hadley hubs. It has titanium pedal shafts and TI spring on the fox dhx5.0. There are also TI screws in the hope 8" rotors. It has hope mono M4 brakes. Gravity crank. Sram XO shifter and sram X9 rear derailuer. SDG seat and seat post. Sunline handlebars wide. Boxxer world cup fork.

Good stuff guys! I stopped and picked up a sixxer myself on the way home today. Just something about bikes n beers!

I came to a startling realization today; I've been going about this all wrong from day one. I've been looking at getting back into mtn biking as a way to get in shape pretty much, and that's it. I'm really bad to go ride after work and constantly look at my watch, and limit my ride time for no reason really. So today, I decided to change that attitude. I left my watch in the truck, as it doesn't matter how long it takes me to make a lap, how long of a break I take, or what time I get home; I'm here to just ride and have fun. And the results speak for themselves; I made four laps, plus some side trail exploration, and I made the climb including the log crossing every single lap. I love the 75mm stem, it's perfect, I can loft the front when needed and the front stays planted when climbing. The seat I bought doesn't fit my arse, if anyone wants to try it let me know, it won't work for me. I did 4.1 miles after work today, Strava only logged 3.8 because some service on my phone had to be enabled first, but I had a blast and I'm really starting to love my bike now that it feels how it should geometry wise. I also ate shit twice, still clipped in, once into a pile of rip rap, that one is gonna hurt a bit tomorrow.

The climb that's been taunting me all this time

The rip rap I feel onto after stalling the climb to the left
:D

I usually keep track of time for how much daylight I have left, what to wear, and whether to bring lights. I also usually keep time to see if I'm getting faster, I don't usually care how long I ride, it's more about the mileage and how much climbing...although some rides I fart around a bit, take more pics, explore other trails, stop at bike shop, talk with other riders. Sometimes I feel like I was slower, but the clock says faster, gotta keep at it to build endurance and average speed.

Really it's about how fast, long and far you want to ride. I just worry about ending rides when I gotta get home and get sleep.

Everybody eats chit sometimes...clipped in is the way to go. When I'm sore after a ride or I ate chit a 15 - 20 minute soak in Epsom Salt bath helps a lot!

O God, I remember my first real off the paved path mtb ride, my buddies and I were walking up the hill in the summer, sweating, huffing, puffing and thinking everybody riding up the hill were crazy, keep riding at least every other day and soon we were riding all the way to the top and then some. Just take it at your own pace, some people need longer to build up based on your own physical condition and diet.

Diet change is very important, and proper stretching, core strengthening, yoga and whole body conditioning makes a huge difference!!!

EDIT: BTW forgot to say that after trying many saddles, I've found the Specialized Body Geometry really works, whether it's saddles, frames, or shoes. Get your sitbones properly measured, evaluate your body flexibility, buy a saddle and try it for couple rides. If you're new or been off the bike for couple weeks....any saddle is gonna feel less than comfortable.

That's pretty much it right there my friend... riding takes as long as it takes, the end... just be sure you tell the wife if you're lucky enough to have one of those (Bonus if she rides too).
I sold my Garmin 500 and went back to a simple computer as it was just too much information for me. I was getting too wrapped up in all the technology & information, and losing touch with the "enjoy riding" aspect of it.
Most of my rides are done after work, finished at or after dark... I think it's great to see people getting back into it after a break or whatever the case may be. I'd like to see more people logging rides with photos here. Show us your trails and the places you ride. "thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup"

I don't remember why I took this picture other than I must have been feeling like a million bucks post ride / post work, and thought... snapshot, as most people are going to bed or watching American Idol right now (not that there's anything wrong with that :lmao::flipoff:)

Picked up a Specialized Rockhopper 29 a couple of months ago. Really liking the 29" meats. Looking forward to hitting the trails in my local mountains this summer.

Just put in a 24.5 mile loop. Started at 5500 ft and climbed to 8122 at the 14 mile mark. Then a fun 17% graded dirt road downhill all the way home.

So I have an idea on lights for night riding. Take the hobby king led bar that's in one of the electronics thread and wire it so you can just attach it to a 3s lipo. Probably 2 light bars, a resistor or two, some wires, and a battery. Make an adjustable mount like one for a gopro that bolts onto your stem. I can do all but the last step. I can design a mount but can't make it, no mill. I ordered the light bar and once it gets here I'm going to see if it's possible.

Just signed up on Strava. Here's the route I did today with 2900 ft of climbing.
Killer climb, Fun downhill | Strava Route
Had a 18% downgrade at one point around 19 miles. Super fun downhill!
My legs feel like jello.!!"thumbsup"

2900ft, holy shit! "thumbsup"

Just got done installing some Odi TLD lock on grips. Gonna hit up some new trails this weekend also. Even if I struggle, at least it breaks the monotony of the same old thing.

My bike is on the right, my coworkers' on the left. Mine is a 2013 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp with 26" wheels. My coworkers' is a mostly stock 2014 Stumpjumper Comp Evo with a 1x10 conversion.

Upgrades on mine include:
-SR Suntour Epicon TR 140mm fork
-Cycletrack platform pedals
-Command Post dropper post
-ODI SDG lock-on grips

I'm toying with the idea of going to a 1x10 setup on mine, but we'll see.

This is my ride. 2008 Devinci Hectik 3.

Fox Float 36 with a Fox Van damper.

Dhx Air 5.0 shock

Magura Louis FR brakes

Specialized Command post

Think that's the important bits.

I wound up not hitting those new trails over the weekend. I woke up yesterday sore as hell from my fall on Thursday. Getting older sucks.

Gotta drop the bike off tomorrow for a tune up also. Took a quick spin close to home, and my cables have finally stretched and need adjusting. Planning to hit up my local stuff tomorrow after work if they can get the tune up done, going to get some video also.

If you're strong enough to push a 1x10 setup I highly suggest it. I wont go back! Cleans everything up and drops some weight.

Also got the Wife out for a 10mi loop at one of the local coastal parks this weekend. Always love it when she asks to go ride, I've learned not to push her to do it and she has a much better time
