Novak Crawler Review/ Tech thread

No biggie to shorten the wires. Just get 'em back on in the correct order (same way they came off). If you want to be really anal like me, make them all the same length. The sensor harness is another matter. Wrap it up and tie it out of the way.

Novak's working on the LR and DB issues. I'll let you know what they come up with.

Any word from Novak yet? I have two of these setups. The LR issue is nuts the way it falls back off a wall. It's like you have a built in rollback
feature. Man I hope they can come up with a fix for these two issues.

New issue with the Novak Brushless

No news yet. Give 'em some time, it's only been a couple weeks.

I used my spektrum setup that works great with a super rooster esc and
lathe motor and the LR kicks in everytime you stop. You have to go into reverse to go ahead again. This happens on flat ground or anytime you
stop moving. So Im back to a Fm receiver and a M8. I have found I can
set the drag on my M8 and it will slow right down when you release the
trigger. I ran it on carpet inside today and it will stop so quick it flips over
end over end. So I have no issue with the drag now.

Novak crawler system

Don't waste your money on this setup until they fix the LR problem.
I bought 2 of them and I wish I would have stay with the old brush
setup. If they fix the DB and LR problem maybe they might work for
a crawler, but as is they are worthless at a comp.

This is the response I just received from Charlie @ Novak.

"We are currently not working on any software updates for the crawler system at this time.

One thing you can try is to put a sintered rotor in your crawler motor and this will improve the brakes and drag-brakes dramatically."

Johnrobholmes

This is part of the beginning of the thread Quote By Johnrobholmes "I tried out the Novak Crawler system in The Beaver. The current build is pretty stable and solid. The weak links in The Beaver are probably the lack of servo saver (20mph crash breaks aluminum horns) and the Pede tranny diff gear. Narrowed Twin Force axles mated to Maxx sized wheels that are smaller than stock make the build near bulletproof and I can really push gearing in both directions if the motor allows. On to the specs"

Now here is my response:

"Have you checked the fastlane Diff gear It's made of steel i think Only downside is that it costs $65"

Well I just installed the lathe motor and put the Novak Crawler brusless
back in its box. I tried the Novak system at the last Comp and it was
a total disappointment. The LR (lock relesae) is a joke for a rock crawler.
I feel sorry for those of us that wasted our money on this setup.

whats a sintered rotor? and why would you go and spend 250 and then replace the rotor, unless....you can go sintered with higher winds?

It should come as no suprise that this system isnt suitable for competition use, I stated that from the beginning of this thread. Although one could get used to the LR detection and still do well in a comp, I still stand by my opinion that the Novak system is for the basher/ trail/ scale rig.

Bob and Linda Novak came by our booth at I-hobby, and we spent about a half hour discussing the issues with the crawler system based on what I have read here. We have not purchased any for the store so I have not had the opportunity to try one. No need really because JRH will tell it how it is, and I know he knows his stuff. ;-)

I was surprised, based on our discussion at I-hobby, with the reply that onebadtj got from them. This was not how it went at the show. I offered my help in any way I could. Linda was very interested, and asked me to contact Charlie via e-mail, which I just did.

[twilight zone music] As I was typing this my phone rang. It was Linda Novak. She assured me they are well aware of the issues and will do their best to address them. I told her I had just e-mailed Charlie and she said she would follow up on that. She said that anything like this will take time but they are on it. [/twilight zone music]

"thumbsup" for Novak

doubtful, that would be like a car company taking a car back, because the next years model had 10 more horsepower.

I wouldnt quite say that, it is more of a programming error. It simply doesnt work properly in all of the applications of crawling (which is exactly what it was designed for- says so right on the box). I will hope that Novak offers a swap of the esc to make it work correctly for Crawling in all aspects.
