New SSD SCX10 axle housings

Yeah, it's not what any of us thought we were getting in to, but if we can get a bearing that fits and doesn't have the play in it, why not. If brand new housings have the play in them, it's not an issue that is necessarily getting worse over time, so maybe a different bearing size will solve the problem for good, and we won't have to worry about it. But I agree that it's a problem that shouldn't have existed in the first place.

Except it doesn't solve the problem for good, Unless SSD were to include them WITH the housings so you wouldn't have to make a separate purchase

Also they would need to include AT LEAST one spare.. That's 3 bearings PER housing, Which I guarantee is not cheaper for them to provide than it would be to fix this..

ANOTHER thing you aren't thinking about, It this would more than likely be a non standard size bearing, meaning that you wouldn't get it in any kit, and very well may be between sizes where no bearing fits correctly..

I cant say this over and over and over. They need to just fix the housings. So that when you buy a housing, And a badass ceramic bearing upgrade pack or something, You actually have a bearing that FITS, Not stuck with some non standard POS.. Get where I'm going with this?

I mean do you want to have to buy bearings IN ADDITION to the housing? SSD doesn't either I'd bet.

Nobody has bashed SSD. Stop trying to turn this into something its not..
Its people wanting a LEGIT fix for the issue, And not letting this issue just get swept under the rug.. Everyone here loves SSD, There is no reason for that to change.

I'm not sure what I was "trying" to turn this in to? There must have been s misunderstanding.

I have a set that I put on my Scale JK a year ago. I have about 40-60 hours on it (rock crawling not trail running) working great. I'm running a HH 2200 stubby brushless. I just bought another set for Ol' Otis, another heavy truck. Installed them on Friday, everything seemed nice and tight and smooth. Ran them all day yesterday (6 Hours of run time) no issues.

I guess I'm not seeing the issue.:???: Whatever it is SSD will take care of it."thumbsup"

Well I decided to check on my pinion bearing on my newly installed SSD axles on my Unimog. When you grab the pinion gear shaft there is a little bit of side to side play or wobble. I checked my TKO10's, NC60s, and AR60s and this play/wobble was not there.

My next question was getting people real world experience. Thanks "Super" for chiming in. I have a HH revolver in my Unimog and glad to see your 2200 Puller is doing fine. I too am also a trail guy. Slow with bursts of wheelspeed. Any one else running brushless with these?

I'm running a 2200kv puller stubby on mine. Rear gears were shot before I got these housing they haven't gave up fully yet. :ror :

I have quite a few hours on mine including a long G6. I have no side to side play. They were rebuilt a few months ago and put in my rig "Hannibal". I dont remember how easy or hard the pinion bearings went in though. I'm running HD standard ratio front and UD rear.

I wonder if the smaller diameter Hd under drive gears has some contribution to it's failure

I just assembled a set about a week ago and noticed an excessive amount of play in the pinion bearings/housing. I ordered a set of pinion shims and some UD gears thinking that it might be my problem, but i guess i wont bother putting them in. Standing by to see what SSD comes up with for a fix.

I'm sorry to report that my fresh from the package housing also has a bit too much play in both the inner and outer bearing (inner more so than outer). Mine has more play up and down than side to side. For reference, this is with brand new FastEddy bearings. I'm hesitant to open my other one as I may just have to return it depending on the resolution. I was really looking forward to updating the axles on my trail worn G6, but I guess she'll have to wait a little longer.

Ditto, except my truck isn't named "Hannibal".

I am running D-60s in two trucks, and after reading about this problem I checked the pinion shaft on all four axles (from the outside) and didn't notice any play.

I also don't remember how easy or hard the bearings fit in.
I'm running std/ud on one and od/ud on the other.
Hardened gears and spools all around.

Hope there is a resolution soon.

Thank you for the video, When I discovered this issue, it never occurred to me to make a video, This perfectly demonstrates the issue. So much play that under torque, it allows the ring gear to slip, NO amount of shimming in the world can fix it either..

Just for anyone wondering, done a scale adventure AND a TTC on the JB welded in bearings, No more sloppy than when I assembled it. So for whats its worth, Its a hell of a bandaid.

Glad I found this thread, had just bought a set and read this thread right before starting the install. Guess I'll wait for an improved design or for the scx2 axles to become available.

I believe the parts to make the scx10 II ARE available... Saw em on amainhobbies

I also wanted to note something about the video I posted. In case anyone was wondering, the outer bearing was also in place.

I'm still hopeful that SSD comes up with something here. I love the look of these axles. The materials feel like they're good quality. I just don't want to strip out my gears!

I got um on both front and rear. They do slide a little better over rocks then the stock plastic covers..

I run them. Like it's been said though, it's mostly aesthetic. If you do upgrade get the v2 ones. V1 has screws all the way around and the bottom ones get shredded and are a PIA to remove.

That's why I'm looking at them. My stock covers seem to snag everything and I noticed the screws will be terrible to remove.
