New hobbywing quickrun fusion pro 2300kb

I have the Pro. Installed it in the TRX4 I built for my stepdad. While I didn't get to do complete testing before giving it to him (it still has no body...he gets to choose what he wants), in the limited testing in did do, the drag brake seemed to be 'solid'.

But does the Fusion Pro have an Active drag brake that adjusts for the speed you are going when you release the throttle or is it just on or off?

Based solely on the description details on the hw website, I would say the drag brake on the pro is likely the same as the original Fusion. Eventually they will ship some more and I'll be able to find out first hand.

I got the Spektrum 1400kv variation with a 17t pinion in the Bronco. Besides being orange, I do not see a whole lot of difference between the Spektrum 2- in one and the Fusion. Fancier front-plate, and €10.-more expensive fore the Fusion. The Spectrum is quite probably Hobbywing too, but with different firmware, because HW programmers don’t work on the Spektrum. Shame, because the running is CCW standard. Take a wild guess which way my TRX4 ánd the Classic Bronco SCX III run.. yup.. CW.. Drag brake is also way too aggressive for me. Hard stops from full throttle have a habit of face-planting the Bronco. On an incline, it just ‘stops’ when You release the throttle, whatever speed You went. Weird experience.

I initially kind of despaired. But, funny enough.. after calibrating… it workt just fine running CW.. I wonder if it can be programmed by beeps. The manual only states that if You keep the on/off button pressed more than 8 seconds, it goes into “Programming Mode”. Oohkay.. and then??

I have used it now for a few packs. It has some oddities.

-It’s smooth in stages. There seems to be 4 or 5 ‘blocks’ of smooth, and inbetween it feels like it changes gears. Smooth-hic-smooth-hic-smooth. It’s hardly noticable, and only happens when not under heavy load.

-It’s way faster than You’d think when hearing “1400kv” and “2- to 3s” ( ‘fast’ being relative, ofcourse.. it’s not Felony ‘fast’.. duh.. :p )
-It can creep almost unnoticable, but when suddenly slamming the throttle, it’ll violently jump forward and goes full-on Rock Bouncer. Power is clearly WAY above Ye Average brushed crawling motor @ 2s.
-How Spektrum did it, I don’t know, but even with a 17t pinion (Which is kinda over geared) in the Axial Classic Bronco, it won’t run hot under load. At all. Even with an outside temp in the high 20C’ low 30C’s (low 90’s for you metric-challenged)
-It’s scary frugal with the amps. I have a couple of hour-long crawls and trails ( granted, not rock-garden heavy) under my belt, and lugged along two 4amp packs for nothing. A tiiiny 2200mah Zippy just keeps-on going. Go figure..

I guess I’ll have to get the official programming box, or USB dongle. The locking hill-brake gets a bit annoying, and that strange ‘shifting’ is probably that, whatsitsname, ‘constant power system’ getting discombobulated when not under load.

In the end, I really like it, despite the quirks, that probably can be edited out. It frees-up SO much realestate inside the chassis. And the lack of wiring spaghetti is also a big bonus.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. It helps me make my decision!

A few months on, I finally got a Hobbywing fusion 1800kv. And exactly as I surmised, it’s almost the same as the Spectrum variation. Same amount of programming options too. Difference being that the Hobbywing can be set with their older 2.0 firmware programming card. Yay! No extra programmers rumbling around in my toolbox. Items don’t correlate with the sticker on the programmer, though. However, just take the manual of the motor, and it can be figured-out pretty quickly what does whàt.

Most important item that I changed is the drag-brake. Stock it’s apparently set for 4kg + rigs, and way too agressive. In The Bronco its more than enough to use setting 2, instead of 5. Modulated/descent brake was good enough. Kept that at 5. (It’ll make sense when You get the set and start fiddling with the programmer)

As it is set-up now, it’s exactly the way I like my rigs to react. Low-set drag-brake, but more aggressive when descending a steep hill. No brake input needed. It just ‘goes, slowly and steady. Coupled with the 2-speed, the Bronco/SCXIII with the 1800kv Fusion has good enough wheelspeed for me. With a 17t it’s not a whole lot slower than a stock Tamiya CR-01 with a 27t silver can. (So You have an idea of the speed) Not too strange because, guess what. A stock rs540 Mabuchi silvercan is about 14000 rpm on a good day. And 1800kv x 7,4 = 13320rpm. Whereas the BL loses less rpm under load.

All in all, I’m a full-on convert for those ‘newfangled’ all-in-one can solutions. And the space saved is a bonus.
Oh, and it’s still frugal with the Amps too, despite the higher Kv than the Spectrum 1400kv. I got about 2 hours of running on different terrain, including a bunch of seriously steep climbs (só steep, actually, that I fell on my bum, trying to climb after the Bronco..:lmao: ) , out of a simple Corally 4000mah 30c pack. No rocks, though.

Your fusion should have come with a sticker that goes on top of the program box to give you the right settings.

Thàt would have been extremely helpful, indeed. Alàs. Only the standard garish coloured Hobbywing stickers in the box. Did come with dual sided sticky pads for the switch and a bunch of tie-wraps, though.

My concern would be whether or not the product is legit. Wasn’t there some illegitimate HW 1080’s floating around a couple of years back?

While I have never had issues with Aliexpress itself most of the stuff I have ordered is low value

I've never ordered from this website. Is it safe and is there anything I should know before I place an order? How is the shipping speed?

Thanks!

Speed is slow, roughly 2 weeks. Someone sent the link and I think I've bought my 2 HW SE's from there and seemed fine.

Yeah I've only bought the 2 SE's during the time when they were hard to get stateside. Like you I've also bought misc things and haven't had any problems. I've heard about copied Holmes Hobbies motors from a post in here actually but don't remember 1080s or anything else.

Thanks guys. I may give it a try and place an order for something small to test it out. I do like the price of the HW and hope to get one on order.

I'm running 2 of the 2300kv versions. One in a Phoenix and one in an SCX10 Pro. My son's truck has the 1800kv SE. I love how much it cleans up the wiring. They all have functioned flawlessly for me. Got direct power servos on the 2300s so I'm not taxing the BEC too much. Low end control is nice and smooth and they seem to have adequate power. Got these rigs geared on the low side so no heat issues. The only complaint I have is that if the truck is stopped on a steep incline and I ease on the throttle, it will roll back/downhill a bit before starts driving forward. On a comp rig this can be a little problematic, especially if the judge interprets that roll as a reverse. For the 2024 season I'm going to be using Revolvers with AM32 escs (80A Rhinos) in my comp rigs but I'll definitely keep using the Fusions in my trail rigs.
