New Castle Copperhead ESC! 1/10 Sensored

So I bought one of these today connected it and set it up. Servo and lights worked great. About 3 seconds spinning the motor (no load) up and it puffed out the magic smoke…major bummer. Looks like I’m not going to be able to run my rig this weekend. :(

Shoot, thats a bummer.

Did you have the ABC wires connect right? I messed that up once and poof!

Yeah everything was connected correctly, just got unlucky. Castle and my LHS got me one the next day so that was really good. Ran it today and it performed perfectly.

It happens. I've purchased several Mamba X ESCs, and all have been perfect, except the most recent. "Funny" (not-so-funny) thing was, there were several of us (within this forum, as well as two other forums I bring to) who purchased new Mamba X within a week of each other, and the problem I experienced, the others experienced the exact same problem...it was almost as of that entire production run had the exact same 'defect'. During that same time period, there were also a few who purchased the MMX, and one who purchased the Mamba Micro X, who also had the same problem.

Yeah, I understand these things happen, especially on something this new. The good news is I've been running it for the last week with my Puller Pro 2700kv and it's been outstanding.

I installed a Copperhead in a TRX6 this weekend. Works great in this instance. I still think it's the sweet spot for what most people want in a good crawler ESC.

Just ordered the Copperhead 10 "Limited Edition" w/ 3200kV motor from Amain. The ESC will probably be going into a Capra-based UR rig I've started working on, while the motor is undecided what vehicle or will end up in. Wonder how it might work (with proper gearing) in the Ryft Kit being delivered today.....

Speaking of the Copperhead ESC & Amain, while they (and everyone else, from what I've been able to tell) are out of stock on the ESC, as well as most of the ESC/motor combos, they do have the "Limited Edition" combo w/ 3200kV. They also have the following 'standard' combos: 1410-3800kV (1/8" shaft), 1410-3800kV (5mm shaft), and 1406-4600kV (Basher Edition)...for those who might be interested & haven't ordered yet.

The SW4 is awesome for running outrunners, but they really missed the mark with the internal BEC. This ESC might be a good replacement, allowing me to get rid of the external BEC.

No need for an internal BEC with so many direct power servo options. Less is less weight and size.

So I just got mine today....

Had to pay 10 bucks over retail on Ebay, but no retailers had them, so I paid it.

It took about 30 minutes to solder on a battery plug, program, and install. It's paired to a 1900 kv Slate Castle motor in my Sendero. I have only run it for about 10 minutes on a big stump I have in the yard, and it is smooth as butter, No chugging or cogging at all, and almost silent. A little bit of a whine, but in no way loud. I am impressed

My Copperhead "Limited Edition" ESC/motor combo arrived yesterday. Now, I'm completely divided as to whether, or not, to put it in the Ryft.

Originally, I had planned on putting a Mamba X in the Ryft, so that I could switch between "rock racer" & "rock crawler" modes, while simultaneously shifting between 'high' & 'low' gears. However, I also see the possibility of using the Copperhead, and skipping the racer/crawler mode switching. One 'benefit' (even if only in appearance) of the second option would be "showcasing" the Copperhead logo in the cockpit (looks a LOT better than the Spektrum logo seen in the RTRs). Either way, I'm still undecided on that vehicle's motor

As for the included 3200kV "gray" Slate motor, I think it's probably going to end up in the Krazed Alcista/Capra build I've been working on here & there.

As I finished typing everything above, and was just about to hit the "Post" button, I think I REALLY like the idea of that Copperhead logo being showcased in the Ryft's cockpit. It also just gave me a 'theme' idea for the Ryft.

So a small review after running two packs through my new Copperhead ESC:

I LOVE IT!!

It is Buttery smooth, responds very predictably to throttle input, and the brakes hold like wheel chocks.

It is very comparable to the Hobbywing Fusion combo I have in the Gatekeeper, but a bit more controllable. The Copperhead is definitely smoother under no load. The Fusion setup will sometimes sort of chug, or hunt for the proper speed when rolling very slowly under no load. The Copperhead appears to have zero issues with matching speed to throttle input, has better braking, and the ability to ramp the drag brake setting make it easier on components.

The fusion setup makes zero motor/sensor whine, where the copperhead does have a very minute whine when pulling a load under low wheel speed conditions.

The total cost of the fusion setup was $165.00 including tax, and the Castle setup comes in at $197.00.

Both are great setups based on my limited experience, and I think the added smoothness, predictability, and better programmability make the Castle combo worth the extra 33 bucks.
