I'm building some shocks up and don't have any green slime. I DO have some marine grease.
This stuff http://www.restockit.com/14-oz-spec...e=froogle&Bvar5=100F1&Bvar6=100F1&Bvar7=100F1

Would this work? It says Petroleum based on the label fwiw.
Don't know if that matters or not. I've been using it to fill my axles to keep water out for a long time now w/no ill effects.
what about to grease up shock components?

I would be concerned with the marine grease causing the orings to swell. The green slime is really to help with "sticktion" more than it is to seal stuff, even though it does help. You can actually use shock oil to lube the seals up as well.
