Karlp's D90 Truggy **Photo Heavy**

Hey folks, so due various troubles here which have kept me off this and with the guy who's building my cage having issues with snow a lack of power and moving workshops this has been delayed a little lol BUT! we have progress yay! here are the firs couple of pictures of the front half of the cage mocked up

We have been speaking about a front winch mount etc but i dont think its something i would ever use so have pretty much decided not to have one or just a fairlead and i can always get one under the hood/body, he is doing some more work this weekend and i should hopefully have some more news/photos on monday

Right finally more progress, it's took a lot longer than I'd have liked to get this far but i think it's worth the wait so far, I got some more pics today of the cage at its final stage to see if I'm happy with it and I think I am unless I'm missing anything you lot can see? There's the Body mounting to do and the winch mountings but over all it's done, anything I should add you think ?

Not much done today, stripped the front axle and re greased and fitted new bearings all round, also started looking at better battery placement, and checking out some wheels and tyres.

Right both axles rebuilt greased and new bearings, 4link trusses came in the post today so thats summin ill sort once i've got the cage/body back, i guess wheel wise it will either end up being the rc4wd ones or the gmade ones as they look the part on a landy, unless i go for something else, next is tyres they all look pretty much the same to me lol so i'm open to recommendations be nice to find something scale and thats usable so the search goes on.

So i got a email today from the talented chap building my cage and it's in the post yay! here are some photos he has sent me, these were took pre sanding/cleanup/paint

So now I need to order some wheels and tyres for it but there seems to be a untold combination I could go for Lol I was thinking maybe the scale rc4wd ones or I could go for the cheaper 6 stud ones not sure which, or even something else as long as it looks the part! had a look and these tyres seem very popular pitbulltires.com/rockbeastscale.php but i am not sure if i can find them this side of the pond

Also I figured I should probably get a decent esc and motoR even though my mtroniks Thing and cheap old motor work, also I guess I should source some shocks too as I'd imagine the extra wight might be a issue, this side of rc is nearly a big money Sink as the 1/5 scale lol

Probably something else I've forgotten too lol

So things to do now, sort out the final position of the shell in the cage and get it mounted up, also need to modify the bottom of the shell slightly as you will see in the last photo, i started building the shocks up tonight just need to do a little research into what weight oil to use and get them finished off and mounted, new wheels are in the post hopefully they will come this week tyres i'm still working on, i was thinking maybe mounting the esc and receiver in a suitable box on the rear of the chassis between the rear shock towers and keeping the battery up front, on that note im not sure if i should carry on with my old nimihs or swap over to lipos like i have on some of my Gmade R1's or xr10 maybe even look into some saddle pack types and mount them either side of the tranny on some plates there's a thought.

Any thoughts comments etc always welcome!

Right had the day off work today as i had to go to hospital and have a little operation so not got much done today, so thought id do my shocks today clearly not the best idea seems i did not pay enough attention when ordering and i fot the 104mm ones not the 94mm ones, shame i never noticed this fact before id assembled them, anyways figured id mount them and see what they look like few pics below

NOt sure i bought them but i got some junfac shock plates off a mate this week and oddly they came in handy today so i fitted them up and remounted the shocks

_DSC0148.jpg

So its back down to roughly where it should be, so i guess i can stick with it or buy the right ones and stick these in the parts bin or flog them or some such not sure atm

Been looking for a project box for the back of the chassis i can find them long enough and wide enough but so far to shallow in height but i only checked ebay so ill look on google and see what i can find.

Right little update, swapped wheels and tyres over, got a pm from a guy who can sort the tyres i want for a sensible price and not a stupid amount of postage lol so i will order those on pay day, Currently waiting for a project box to turn up for the electrics, some bolts to replace those piss poor examples they supply with the wheels i stripped 4 and i was careful when i put them together, got some stuff to make some decent spacers out of coming too, you can see the temp ones in a pic below, cut a bigger and neater slot in lower half of chassis too, started drawing up some ideas on how to box in the chassis so you can't see through it, maybe ill try and work something out at the sides underneath too, also need to work out some side windows too, few pics below,

also need to change some bolts as they are to shiny

Ty CRAWLER*KING*, Right had a try at mocking up some inner arches today so you can't see through the body it was going pretty well till i went and answered the door to the postman came back and found the dog drinking my tea who then knocked over the plasweld all over what id just spent the last 3 hours working on turning it into a molten sticky lump lol.

So once id sorted the dog out and cleaned up i had another ago couple of pics below i think it will work pretty well just need to sort the mounting points out and brace it inside so they don't flex to much, these are just the first trys i expect ill redo them once i get them right.

_DSC0158.jpg

Be nice to have it out of alloy but i expect it would cost more than its worth to get it fabbed up and all i have access to at work is 3mm plate which is far to heavy lol

Also the box came for the electrics its a bit of a tight fit but i think i can make it work just need to extend the wiring which im not looking forward too, i reckon i will cook the rooster better than KFC cook theirs lol

Right done a little bit today, fitted a RC4WD chassis servo mount kit which did a couple of things, one it got the servo off the axle which looks a lot better, but it also caused a issue with the inner arches i made on that side of the chassis as it left little to no roomw where they sat which lead to some swearing and a lot of faffing about and several remakes later so with a little modification to the shock tower and the design of the arch i got it sorted, next i had ago at making the side sections to fill in the gap behind the wheel, not sure how im goning to mount it yet, one options alloy angle onto the inner arch and glue it so i'm trying some epoxy out on some scrap stryene to see how it holds, im not sure if i should do anything on the underside of the cab or not, had a try at soldering today on a old esc im glad i practiced as its now pretty singed lol so need to find me someone to ply with beer/cake to do it for me as i dont really wanna kill the esc lol

Tomorrows jobs are to get the box mounted on the back for the electrics, cut out the side windows and see how they look, reinforce the back cab mounts, sort the battery mounting out and decide which batteries im going to run in the end, do i finally upgrade to lipos or keep using the nimihs ive always used, also do i 4 link this? never had a rig with it so dont really know if there is much diffrence in it?

Few pics below of what i did earlier.

Also no laughing at my high end motor! :ror:

Right done some more tonight, finished both the archs just need to get my hands on some of those little clips push comes to shove i'll buy the parts tree to finish the fixing of them, i have given up on trying to mount the esc and reciever in a box on rear of chassis i cant find one big enough to fit in the space i have so im gonna mount them in the cab up front by making a T shaped battery plate so i can sit them just behind the arches, neither way much so i dont think CoG will be affected to much. i mocked up one out of steel at work just to get a rough idea of what it could look like but final one will be out of alu to keep weight down, worst part of all this is i need to change the motor wires on the rooster as the ones i have atm very short about 40mm unless i stick a deans connector or some such on them, next i need to settle on some batteries to use. been looking to see what sizes they come on, if i go for a small MaH it seems to give a much wider choice in sizes, so i need to have a poke about and settle on that, sorted side windows just need to find a glue that works for them and the body, few pics below of what i been upto.

Hey folks! Been a while hasn't it! Works been very busy and family life's been pretty hectic too so i have had little to no spare time to do anything, Anyways thats enough of the excuses, So here's what i've done last few days, I made a plate up to mount the electrics on oddly i saw a similar thing on the for sale section here on someones truck, it gives me plenty of space to mount everything up and also enough space to run what ever batteries i settle on using as you will see in the photos i still need tidy up cables a little but you get the idea of how it all sits and fits, Sorted the motor cables out and removed the extras the previous owner had added but the on/off swtich cable broke today so i think i'll just bypass that unless its a no no? Both side windows are cut and ready to be fitted i'll do that just before i paint the body and mask them up.

Right as for painting i am freaking dreading it as i hate painting more than i hate a very hated thing, so i shall have to read up on that once i've cleaned body up and gone over it with some grit paper, also need to settle on a colour i'm tempted by red or possibly a metallic lime green lol i dunno i'll probably decide on the day i go to buy it lol few pics below

Hey folks, managed to get some time to actually do some more to this today about time eh? So i finished the shell up today, fitted the front window, masked up some stuff to i wanted to get the side windows fitted and masked too but the glue i ordered has not got here yet so i masked up where i'm going to stick them in when it comes, masked up the areas on the wings/bonnet where i'm going to mount the chequered plate done it just enough so when the plates on there the paint will go under the edge a couple of mill, i did notice one or two tiny marks on body now i have primed, not sure how best to treat that a little rub down with some fine wet'n'dry i guess.

So a bunch of questions/thoughts:

How long do i let the primer dry/harden before i can apply any masking tape as i am going to paint the inside a different colour than the outside. I was thinking 48 hours or so?
Do i need to rub it down before i start the top coats?
How long should i let it dry before i start the top coats?
Do i need to rub it down between top coats?
Once i've done the top coats does it need rubbing down before the Lacquer?
I am painting some items with a satin finish should i still lacquer them too?

So as you can see i am a complete painting nub lol So if anyone has any thoughts on the above be great to hear them, if not, no worries and thanks for reading! few Photos below of my dodgy painting

So I have finally finished this ! It took a lot longer to do than I ever hoped and my dads been in hospital for over a month now so what with either being at work or at the hospital I've had no free time what so ever, so yeah here is what I have been doing,

So I rubbed down the alloy panels and gave them a coat of etch primer (not cheap stuff lol)

_DSC0342.jpg

Next I gave them a coat of satin black to match the exo cage.

_DSC0343.jpg

Next I started the top coat ! I was dreading this tbh as I hate painting, this is it after 6-7 top coats.

_DSC0344.jpg

Next I did the body lines and window rubbers using a Matt paint and some small brushes, A little awkward but I got it done in the end.

_DSC0349.jpg

Next I started on the grill I cut out some alloy body filling mesh to fit behind the grill, I then painted behind the grill and fitted the mesh then the plastic grill over the top, looks ok I think.

_DSC0347.jpg

Next I mounted up the the alloy up on the body, I'd masked off the areas behind when painting so I could get a good bond on the body.

_DSC0351.jpg

And here are a few photos of it all shiny before I wreck it lol

So I'd like to say thanks to everyone who commented and gave words of encouragement. Also a huge thanks to Matt at Finishline Crawlers for his awesome cage work!
