Hypothetically: Trail Honcho SCX10 vs SCX10.2

the tamiya cars are much smaller than the typical 1/10 crawlers. I had a locked CC01 and it ran good but was always the underdog. 3.85" tires! A scx10 would run circles around it... lets see if I can find a pic... nope

I have not found this specific comparison, so I thought I'd open a new thread.

Does the body of the original SCX10 Honcho (including scale details of any sort) feel by any mean better-quality than the SCX10.2? It seems to be, by looking at videos, that the SCX10.2 was really budget minded. I know they took the spare tire out, but I am not sure there's more.

Also, I'd throw in the classic question: disregarding parts availability, is the SCX10 more capable than the SCX10.2? I had to ask *ducks for cover*

Thanks!
Loaded questions 🤣
Better quality? not really in terms of the plastic but (if I’m not mistaken) when horizon bought out axial they improved things. The 10.2 is a foundation for many other platforms.

More capable is a loose statement but side by side each would make it to the top in the same or different lines. Drivers make up a majority of the capability.

I do however still like to rock the OG10 occasionally. Nothing but the gears and a few braces (maybe) are original.

How's that for loaded 😂

Thanks for added info, I was actually worried about gears more than anything else, but I take it as a good sign that that's the only thing left to OG!

It will boil down to wallets, if I find a good deal I'll take either an OG or 10.2. I'm liking the Gmade BOM GS02F a lot so I might stray it all off.

I saw that the Gmade BOM had this design:

And I saw it's not shimmable the way I am used to. I was just afraid to get it nice and stripped in one of the binds I might *cough* not be the driver it deserves.
;)

So, I'll run those part numbers on Google and see if there's online stores shipping to me. This is going to give me a good reference point on how hard it's gonna be to fix any Gmade truck. Dang, I love how they crawl! Ah, being mature is hard.
Sorry, I don't have the truck so I don't want to comment on the diff and be wrong about it. Maybe post this up in the "G-Made Crawlers" section of the forum.

Horizon made some things better like the quality of plastic, but the overcomplicated design of the SCX10 III was a downgrade IMO. Their customer service used to be amazing, but that has fallen off and now they even have trouble keep parts in stock. Axial has had a far fall from grace IMO.

No worries, thanks and great suggestion. I seem to be able to find an okay amount of spare parts for Gmade, there's one huge online store here which seems to have invested a lot in that brand. They do have a beautiful GS02F BOM KIT (newest revision) in stock for 359€, it has a sexy body and I do have all the electronics it's missing... - I've never bought a new RC in my life...

I still love their products and legacy and whatnot but a lot of friends I agree with you and they've been around crawling since the AX etc... when I ask they say the same thing.

If you need helping building a kit and/or choosing electronics, you on the perfect forum to ask those questions!

I've checked around how it would be to order Gmade parts that can wear out, for example bevels etc. and - while the availability of other Gmade parts is plenty, here - some key elements are impossible to find (insane how the bevels are the rarest). It would force me to order from the UK, Switzerland etc.

So far, it's looking like it's not going to be easy to find key parts, if they break and 3rd party upgrades are non-existent. I am sure it will pick up because they are great RC cars, but in my specific case I'd probably opt for the old tried and true. Even if I get an OG10 I have better chances to fit some 10.2 axles on it and keep going than I have to find a single axle pinion for a spanking new Gmade, here.

On the local homegrown, bio, friendly Amazon store  here - I can still (believe it or not) find OG10 axle upgrades, even fully-built metal axles (not that I do want them, as I am a plastikeer) and sometimes there's even SCX10 fully-built front and real axle sets, with portals, advertised as made for the 10.2. The typical Chamazon mess is sometimes a good mess.

i still have a build going that uses 10.1 axles there not obsolete just yet
it hard to find open diff axles these days
I think you'd have to go aftermarket for OG SCX10 axles, correct? I don't think Axial offers those housings or internals any longer.

i think you can still get new housings i know the gears are still available from axial or last i check they were

That appears to be old stock. OG SCX10 isn't even listed on Horizon's website.

And the OG axle housing set shows as being discontinued on Axial's website.

Here in Europe I see original spare parts available in stores for OG10 or even AX10 sometimes. They show up as "readily available" and some of them "must be ordered, available in 30 days". I know for sure that such stores do have it when they say they do, but I'm not sure the to-order will result in "dude, we no make them anymore".

So essentially the OG10 is kind of a more reliable deal than a newer (and better, on many aspects for sure) Gmade.

The turning radius of an airplane is back in style, I'm telling ya!

I don’t think the OG has been made for years, somewhere around the 10.2 builders kit release. If you really wanted to you could find an HSP ( I forget which model) but they were similar and most parts were interchangeable.

On rbeh other hand you could easily piece one together, new parts are still available.

Just looked on axial’s website and saw the early Bronco (10.3) and the deadbolt (10.2) are both available at $299…

FWIW - I would buy either again.

I noticed the SCX10 II Deadbolt the other day as well. Had no idea they were still selling that, but I agree it isn't a bad choice. I'm just not a fan of the SCX10 III, but again the Bronco RTR for $300 isn't bad. Between these two, I'm choosing the SCX10 II Deadbolt. But I'm still taking a Vanquish rig over both.

Same, the Deadbolt has a spiffy funny spicy look and vibe when it's going up an obstacle and the rear bounces a tad in a twerky way. And the dude with the helmet is super focused and weeeee off we go.

I think I gave you an idea of how cool it feels to me.
