How to change spur gear?

Hi,
I have my Trail Trekker apart, and can't remove the spur gear. The retention nut on top just spins. Any suggestions? Do I have to remove the back cover and just grip the gear on the back side? Or am I missing something? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I tried that. When holding the spur gear, the nut and shaft turn together. I assume I'll have to disassemble the trans further so I can hold the back end of the shaft.

My thought was to replace the spur gear with one with a few extra teeth. My batteries are getting weak, so thought the extra torque would be good.
