Hobbywing Xerun AXE

This is just my point of view, not law..

It seems in the vids that from motion to stop, there is just a little movement and then the breaks kick in good, so just from the vids they have done a good job, But.... If you are hardcore,,, it seems the a brushed system is still going to be perfection....

While I find this HobbyWing AXE motor/ESC pairing to be quite interesting, I will comment that what I like about the 1800kv Revolver that I picked up from Holmes Hobbies is that it will take 4S.

With a Mamba X ESC, I bet it's gonna be sweet powering up a carbon-fiber frame-railed Bomber drivetrain...

Not ruling out picking up this HW setup for a future 1.9 build, or even dropping it into my Ascender on 1.7" wheels and 4.19" scaler tires!

(although, it certainly is running perfectly now with a HW 1080 ESC and a Holmes Trailmaster 550 21t)

This has always mystified me. People go to great lengths to make their rigs "scale", but then give them a scale speed of 200mph+? There are real crawlers that double up t-cases along with crazy-short diff ratios to make them twice as slow, not twice as fast. Regardless this system is designed for low-speed control rather than blistering speed.

Speed doesn’t really just scale up like that. Off road rigs have wheel speed. Yeah, some rigs run crazy low crawl boxes but that’s not everyone nor is it the high end built crawlers really.

Actually it does. When a 1/10th scale truck moves 10 feet, it's a scale 100 feet. So 10mph on a GPS is like 100mph for a full-sized truck. They might handle it better because gravity & mass aren't scaling linearly, but it doesn't change the fact you're replicating a full-sized rock crawler doing 100mph+.



To each their own, but solid axle models just aren't designed for speed IMO.

But when you are looking at RPM of a wheel spinning on an obstacle or terrain it does not scale the same way and that is more pertinent to the immediate action of the motor. Scale speed doesn’t compare because physics and terrain aren’t the same at the scale nor are the forces that are applying to it.

Solid axles rigs built to be run with wheel speed can handle just fine and we’ve been doing it for years.
 
When I watch KOH footage, rigs such as Randy Slawson' Bomber are certainly scootin' across the desert pretty damn quick before they slow for the boulders...

Likewise, when Clayton Hollingsworth aims his rock bouncer at the crest of a hill in the Southern Rock Racing series, it's an earth-shaking amount of power being released.

Speed is Mmm-Mmm-Good.

I’ve got some here and tested them in crawlers. The vesc has terrible low speed resolution in comparison to any name brand esc made for crawling. The FOC aspect might run a motor more efficiently, but it is not harnessed well enough in that product during startup speeds.
 
I'm thinking a lot of the confusion here is coming from things lost in language translation.

I'm as excited as anybody to try something new. This setup will be going in my next build - whatever that may be. My question is whether I should go with the 1800kv or 2300kv. I like to crawl rocks in a scale fashion. I don't like to jump up rocks like the comp guys. I do like some wheel speed in reserve though.

3300kv on 3s is enough speed for light bashing and rock racing.
A 3300Kv option popped up in the specification page.

This motor is a shorter can then a normal 540, close to a Castle 1406 I’d say but I can check that later. Either way, I would say that would be smaller than I’d run in one of my 2.2 rigs.
 
I ran Charlie's (from Hobbywing) TRX-4 with this ESC and motor for a few minutes this weekend. It was very smooth. I liked how you can have the drag brake delay so if you let off the throttle, it wont just lock up and make the truck do a front flip. The ESC is much lighter weight than it looks. Its a good bit lighter than a Mamba X. I'd prefer a more adjustable length sensor cable without that big plug, but thats the only real complaint I had about it.

He said retail is going to be ~$250. As much as I like Hobbywing's products, I dont know if I am willing to fork out more than I'd pay for a Mamba X combo for it. The Mamba X has great downhill control and I like being able to toss a 4S pack in my truck every now and then to have a little fun.

This. $250 and limited to 3s and a 3amp BEC, not for me but good luck.

Also don't forget the $50 Bluetooth adapter Castle sells.

I run 4S/6S on my crawlers, but only 4S on the 1900kv and 6s on the 1200kv motors. Its not for jumping, just a lot more low-end torque.
