Have tech questions? Will answer.

I was looking at this picture, and just realized that I have not connected the red wire on the front esc. (But the dig worked with the Futaba 4PL as it is)

the PROG MIX Screen is set as follows:
MODE: ON; FWRD: +100; BRAK: +100; MST: THR; SLV: CH4;
MXMD: ON; TRIM: OFF

DUAL ESC is set:
MODE: ACT
RATE: 100<R
MXMD: ON <R
TRIM: OFF <R

wahoo... i fixed it. changing the settings from above:

PROG MIX:
FWRD: 0
BRAK: 0

i tried lots of configurations before coming here... sorry if this was knownst to all but not knownst to me. :)

Hi, pretty new at this and still learning bit by bit. Trying to understand Crawler motors better, so my LHS recommends a 35T or 40T brushed motor for an Axial Builder Kit for a crawler and tells me that the higher turn creates more torque, but then I see lots of folks talking about running 13T or 27T motors.

Can someone please explain to me how this all works, I'm pretty confused by it all right now.

Thanks in advance.

A higher turn motor has more windings than a lower turn motor. It will produce lower rpm's than a low wind motor. It also gives yo more run time. The 13t motors are 5 slot armatures, and the windings do not corrolate to the "standard" 3 slot.

Personally a 35t motor on 3s is the magic bullet for an scx10II for effeiency and wheelspeed.

Would you recommend a 2200 kV Puller Pro Standard or Stubby for a RC4WD Beast 2 on 3S? I’m getting ready for a build this fall - looking for low speeds and may gear down from stock. Could I expect smooth startup with these motors and a Sidewinder 4? I also considered the Mamba X, but I’ve used one before and would like to try something different - try to do this with each new build. How about the HW QuicRun QR10BL120? The specs look nice and it’s sensored, but I haven’t seen anyone use it in a crawler. I’m sorry to see that the BLE Pro is not still offered ... would go with it instead!

As far as the ESC goes, the Mamba X for sensored is the best available IMO.
If you were looking at a Revolver or other sensorless motor, then yes the SW4 would probably be the better choice for 2/3s use.

Not much in a motor that would cause that unless a bearing is seizing. Geartrain binding, radio settings, radio quality, ESC quality, those are more typical causes. The stock radio on the wraith 1.9 gave me a lot of fits and surges until I replaced it.

Running a Dx5 rugged, 4 ch marine rx and HH brxl. everything is new except the Brxl, its 8 years old and still going strong.

I might try swapping out rx....

What would cause surging @ low throttle settings when running on level ground, or even downhill? Brushed Trailmaster motor.
I had the same problem with a hobbywing brushless sensored ESC with a Tekin motor. Switched out the hobbywing ESC per John Holmes recommendation and the surging went away. What kind of esc, radio are you running?

**EDIT** you posted all this info as I was typing this. Never mind

Hey John, ive got a trailmaster 550 21t in my scx10, I'd like to upgrade to something that has smoother power delivery, low speed control and very little loss of speed when crawling. I'm debating between a revolver and a 540 magnum. Thoughts?

I'm a huge magnum fan at this point. 13t crawlmaster magnum on 3s. Wont be installing more revolvers in my daily drivers unless its seeing water or for testing.

Update, i had some time this weekend, and tore the rig down for maintenance.

I found a drive shaft set screw rubbing the transmission case, thus the surging! I guess the power of the trail master overwhelmed it in normal power, but not going downhill and on the flats.
Lesson learned always check mechanical before blaming electronics....
