Gramps Indoor Mini Crawler Course Build

Looks great! The day my Deadbolt arrived in the mail I did something similar in the corner of the loft in our cabin. Only I used real rocks..... Now I’m kicking myself because I absolutely love the course but I can’t move it because I’ll surely never get this same configuration figured out again.

I saw your post and got to thinking that maybe I could mostly leave it where it is but slide a piece of think plywood underneath it and then plaster cloth it to make a mold? I don’t think it would be quite as fun because the real rocks add that weight and tactile feel I’m not going to get with plaster cloth. However, I have to come up with something. I have a feeling that that wife isn’t going to allow this course to be a permanent installation in our carpeted loft!

Added to greenery

That looks awesome. I need to make me some sort of indoor course. I maye use some chicken wire or something as a base to tryin and keep the weight down and I could move it about.

Whatever you do keep it light! I’ve built a really cool course up in our cabin loft out of real rocks and now I’m kicking myself. I’ve gotten it just the way I like it and now when I want to move it it’s going to be a huge pain and who knows if I’ll get all the rocks back in the same position.

Photos and lots of them homie. I would say though that having the course change is not a bad thing keeps it interesting.

That’s true but it still gives me anxiety!

So here’s some pics. It seems like pics don’t do it justice, I’ve tried every angle and it just doesn’t seem to look cool but I promise it is, lol.

There’s 3 different sections and each have multiple approaches up and down. I’m going to upload a little video too.

Decided to expand the track. I decided to use the frig that sets at the end. Right now it's in the planning stage.

I'll drive it some and see what I want to add or take away.

Creepin

Would it be possible to make a mold of your course?
If so, you could then cast a lighter more portable one.
You would then be able to add or remove features to your liking.

Nice course Gramps.

Thanks

Actually the course is pretty light. The heaviest part is the boards that it's mounted on. It's 2 4x2 sections. The new section on the frig can also be removed. I'd make more sections but storage is an issue for me. I'm sure as time goes on I will either make a new section for make changes to the current ones.

Added some more crushed baking pans for testing. Also flopped the 2 sections

This configuration might make it to easy.

Flipped made it to easy to get on the frig. It also hide some lines or made them almost impossible to see. So I flipped it back. Made several different courses on the frig most have not made the 3 day test. This is the latest one. https://youtu.be/Z2sjwQtamco

The today a box came from Amazon that was a good size so it's been reconfigured again. Probably another test run coming.

Think it fits good with the flow of your course but understand how it goes while building and testing. I always worry about it getting boring if not challenging so end up reworking areas to much. Lol

Cleaned the frig off and put the Amazon box on top and started adding the aluminum roasting bins back. Make a couple pass on it. Think I like where this one's going.

Have some ideas for the flat section of the box. I thinking some tree limbs could add some interest.

That's cool. I am starting to put together a similar type of thing, but on pallets in my shop. I was going to build 4 or 5 pallets that can be moved around with a pallet jack so the course can be changed over and over. We have 4 of the SCX24's trucks on the way for Christmas so my wife and kids and myself can all have one to drive. With just 4 pallets I would have a total of 256 different combinations based on ordered outcomes. Pretty crazy to think that with 4 squares you could make that many variations of a mini crawler course. I just need to order some plaster cloth and start throwing things together.

It was finally time to stop rearranging the frig addition to the course. Got out the plaster cloth and finalized the design. It drying now, maybe by tomorrow it will be ready for some color. Going to try some colored, sanded grout which I will mix to a more paint consistency. This should also add a little strength to to it.
