Got myself a Phoenix!

I don't recall anyone putting their Rx in the fuel cell...think most are putting them on one of the side boards. For mine, since there's a micro servo on the driver's side of the chassis, I'll be putting the Rx on the passenger side side board, so as to help keep things "balanced" left/right.

Im with twade on that one as well. I dont use the fuel cell for the rx. Mine generally goes by the servo or on a slider, but my v3 phoenix its hangin of the back of the trans lol. I dont do water either, n if i do, its no more the about the bott side of the rim with non vented tires.

Yall are killin this build. Its awesome your girl is diggin right in with u. I built my wife a honcho without her knowin. She bought cryed when she seen the license plate lol. Its a alabama plate n i call her sugar baby, so thats wat i had put on it. She hasnt been able to get out n run with me though, preggers with twins n bout to pop any day now

BMow - glad to see you here, your builds have helped me a ton! What’s your speed like with the 3800? And what pinion?

Glad to hear you've found my build threads useful!"thumbsup"

As for the speed of the 3800, well not really sure, but insanely fast for a crawler! I do like having the extra power for powering over rocks and obstacles if needed. The pinion I believe is stock. It's been awhile since I've had the spur gear cover off, so I'm not too sure at the moment.

I guess I'm one of the few that did use the rear fuel cell for my receiver. I don't normally like to mount it in the rear and I usually mount the receiver on the sliders like everybody else. I figured I'd try the fuel cell out on my PRO. I don't normally run in water, but I did add just a little bead of silicone on the fuel cell lid to somewhat make it splash resistance.

Thanks everyone. I got to thinking about it last night and there sure are a lot of holes in that box, and a lot of wires that need to be run in. Like i say I don't plan on much water, if any, but the ability is nice. I may start looking into a traxxas box, or the old school receiver in a balloon trick, we'll just have to see how it plays out when the time comes.

Hope to start on the body today. I think my problem is that I get a truck or whatever project completely ready to run then have to paint. At that point I just want to drive so I'm not patient. Maybe this evening Taylor can start on Bag H and I'll get to masking. Mid 70's here in Napa until Thursday, so I've got a little time to paint.

Indybama, Congrats on the twins! Boys, girls or both?

i love playing submerine ive been known to mount my recivers on the inside roof of the body so i could go deeper with out loosing signal
i stoped mounting the recivers inside of somethihg cause it just seemed that the whatever i use would just fill up with water anyway now if i use anything like that for any reason i drill a small hole in the bottom to let the water out and air in even if theres nothing in it
my recivers dont say waterproof on them but ive never had one fail from getting wet i have seen some glitch alittle but usualy shaking the water off the rig clears it enuff that the glitching goes away

The Traxxas waterproof receiver boxes are fantastic. I even use them in some of my boats (the boats with "other" Rx boxes are slowly being swapped to Traxxas Rx boxes). Only 'problem' right now is that many of them are out-of-stock. Check out #3628, be as it's narrow enough that it should be able to fit one of the sides (I'll know later today, as it's "out for delivery" right now).

Good suggestion, even a run of the mill Trx4 receiver box is very nice, albeit on the large side.

The element box is also functional, but on the larger side.

On the other hand, the Phoenix can run up to 4 servos, light kits, etc, maybe a larger receiver box isn’t a bad idea.

Also, last word on the motor choice, I was led to believe early on that you had to choose low kv for better low speed control, or high kv for wheel speed. I have found so far that when using castle esc’s that’s not the case. You can run something like the 2850 and still have really good low end resolution, and plenty of wheel speed for a crawler.

Not trying to derail the thread with unnecessary back and forth, just wanted add my $0.02 on that subject.

First, regarding the motor kv thing, after reading several other (non VS4-10) threads, I'm starting to "understand the light" (not 'see', but 'understand'), and willing to " test the waters", so-to-speak. In addition to the two new Class 3 rigs I'm building (Phoenix, plus another based on the Game changer 4.2 chassis), I'm also in the early stages of building a U4/rock racer 'crossover' based on the Alcista chassis & AX10 transmission. For that, I was originally planning on going with the Puller Pro V2 2200kv...but, I'm willing to give the 2700kv a try.

As for the Traxxas 3628 Rx box, while it is "small", it should still be large enough (and deep enough) to fit many receivers with more than 4 channels. I'll be putting a FlySky GFr8B (8Ch Rx) inside, for which I should know later today whether (or not) that will fit. My Phoenix NEEDS an 8Ch Rx, as 7 channels will be 'controllable', and 1 channel 'always on' (power only).

Please feel free to derail the thread with motor kv (and gear ratio) discussion. My last serious RC truck endeavor was a 2002 HPI Savage nitro (in 2002). After that it was gasoline airplane, then electric heli's planes and drones. I understand the kv deal a little bit, but motors and esc's have come so far, plus being new to crawling I'll take any discussion to learn.

Panther, that's the receiver I'm running also, I'll look forward to your update on how the receiver fits, I'll have to look for your build thread. I think I'll be running 6 Channels also:
1.) Steering
2.) ESC Power
3.) ESC AUX
4.) Winch
5.) OD
6.) Dig
7.) LED's

What's your 7th?

Should be fun assigning switches on the noble for that mess.

Edit to add: Since we're on motors, I seem to remember in helicopters shortening motor wires was a huge no no. Is that still the case? I don't think I'm going to need 4 miles as supplied, though appreciated.

I can't give away all my "surprises"...at least, not yet (when they're revealed, it will be in my build thread...if you search the RCC forum using keywords "blackcat" and "Phoenix", you should find it)...but, I'll give this much:

1 - steering
2 - throttle
3 - winch
4 - DIG
5 - OD
6 - power switchable accessory #1
7 - power switchable accessory #2
8 - headlights (always on)

The "problem" with the current FGr8B & FG12B receivers is that the last channel doesn't have a user-controllable signal...they are, essentially, "power only". However, when the V2 versions are released ('whenever' that happens, as they were mentioned months ago), those final channels will be user-controllable the same as the other 7/11 channels.

I read that about the flysky receivers. Hopefully it gets updated soon. I’m new to flysky, I remember when they (and hobby king in general) launched. Their stuff has come a long way and I Love my Noble.

The first coats of paint are on. Amazing my moms literally an artist and I got exactly zero of those talents, if she wasn’t half a country away I’d be tempted to let her paint it.

I missed the tail light masks for the first light rack coat, so I’ll sort that out later, not sure how though. Other than that things appear to have gone smoothly based on my skill level and patience. We’ll see in a couple days I suppose.

I believe Taylor will be starting on bag H shortly. I’m beginning to wonder who actually owns the truck, but I believe it’s given me the understanding and the green light for future purchases!

For posterity! I think I’m done spraying the green, just need to see how long to wait before spraying the white.

Now, I’m not a smart man… but it sounds to me like a 3rd rig is in order. Since you missed out on the build aspect…

Twade, I think you may be correct! We’ll have to see if she likes driving. So far she’s been to scared to drive the Gspeed or the Scx24.

Panther, you can’t beat tig wire for hanging parts. That’s 316 too, the good stuff! Ha!

We got a good bit done tonight, not much to show. The paints drying, and most of step H is completed. Tomorrow I’ll have to center all servos and we can complete step H and move on to the body mounting!

Maybe she'd enjoy driving something faster? Could pick up something for her, like the 2WD Traxxas Slash Kit...or, better yet, a 1/10 or 1/8 buggy, but build it for bashing, instead of racing.

Some great examples would be the Tekno MT410, TLR 8ight-XE, and Axial Ryft Kit. The link below will take you to all the 1/8 & 1/10 buggy, rally car, SCT, truck, and monster truck kits Amain currently has "in-stock" (if you remove the 'in stock' filter, it will show all kits within these categories that a main carries, including those currently out of stock):

Indybama, Congrats on the twins! Boys, girls or both?

Alpinex, we're havin a boy n a girl twins. The wife went for a checkup yesterday, which was the due date. Cayden is 4 lbs n emma is 3lbs. Said they would enduce her yesterday because they arent ready, but then set her a c ssction date for next wed.... I wouldnt think a week would b long enuf for emma to grow to much. So shes goina go see our family dr to see wat he says.

Dang Bama, going to have your hands full! In the best way! Hope everything goes well, and everyone is happy and healthy!

Panther, she probably would enjoy something faster, or that she could just drive around. The issue with that is we live in very steep terrain, and the only time she could really drive it requires quite a drive. A crawler or a tail truck she cant drive right outside. She just scared to drive a crawler because she's worried she'll break it, hopefully now that she's helping with the build, she'll understand everything is replaceable.

I'm anxious to see my paint when I get home!

Thanks alpine! Dont feel bad, my wife wont drive any of mine either, for the same reason. Shes affraid she'll break it n ill get mad at her. Its just a big kids toy lol. If it breaks, we'll fix it, no big deal. She wants her own, so if she breaks it, its hers. So i built her one n a traxxas rustler as well. She breaks it, shes gotta fix it...
