Bought a used rig with a Flysky 3ch tx for one of boys. Problem is that the range is crap. Antenna is vertical out of rx box. Have no functional issues we have found, just range is about 30-40ft.

Is this just a characteristic of the set up or known issue? Or am I going to have to trash and buy a new one?

Never had a problem with mine as far as range goes. (GT3B, GT3C, GT5) I have had one receiver that ripped the end of the antennae off, and that one had a terrible range. Check the antennaes, both on the receiver and the radio. Receiver wire could have been pinched in the radio box by the PO - may not be overly noticeable without digging in. I've done it myself a few times over the years. If it's a folding one on the radio, sometimes they have issues if the wire gets crimped somehow.

i had a old axial flysky do that new out of the box i switched it to a crawler that i wasent more than 10ft from at any time used it for years like that before the wheel stoped working

Of the 4 i currently own i had one started loosing range, i swapped receivers and nothing changed, i have hacked all of mine, so i took it apart and i found the solder point from the antenna to the radio had come loose (i probably pulled it while i hacked it) so i just resodered the cable and got my range back.
