First real RC - Craigslist find - Super-budget build

Esc is back together. It's ugly, but hopefully it'll hold.

I've been gone awhile! Short story is we moved from Atlanta back to the Austin area where I grew up. The Bomber has been sitting since the move, along with the Hyrax tires and plastic Methods. I had a little time so I dug it all out and mounted them up. I had to revive my ZOPpower 4s from about 7 volts! But she runs like a scalded dog and the handling is SO much better with the CI foams and Hyrax tires. An unexpected benefit: the Hyrax and Methods are about 3.5oz lighter than the old wheel/tire combo! I'll take it! Very much looking forward to getting her out into the wild soon!

I have yet to install the front beef tubes or the aluminum rear axle, but it is something to look forward to. I still have upgraded parts to install and I don't have to spend more money (yet)!

Welcome back to the forum AND the neighborhood!

Never list prices like that, I almost choked realizing how much I have into rigs"thumbsup"

HAHA that is exactly why I did it! My buddy told me before I got into RC that he had about $1500 in his SCX and I just couldn't understand how... Needless to say, now I do!

So, I was sitting here fantasizing about how sweet this thing is going to look with the SSD Diamond rear axle so much that I decided to do some research to make sure the install would go smoothly. Turns out, there seems to be a known clearance issue with stock driveshafts vs the spur cover when using a center diff.

I got excited at the prospect of being the exception and decided to check my current clearance and make a wildly hopeful speculation that I would be all good. Turns out, I have clearance issues as it is, with the stock rear driveshaft and stock offset rearend.

So I am faced with a dilemma: sell this piece of rc artwork that is the SSD Diamond, or spend *another* $70 on MIP driveshafts. Dammit.

Has anybody successfully shimmed or spaced out the trans/motor/tcase for clearance? Or is the only known solution to go with the MIPs?

My yet-to-be-completely-assembled Bomber #2 has the SSD centered-diff Diamond rear axle and MIP shafts... So I unfortunately can't comment on other options.

Had a little time in the last couple weeks to get myself and the Bomber back outside. I hit up Balcones park and the Pennybacker bridge overlook.

Also, I got tired of staring at the SSD rear axle sitting in my parts box, so I broke down and ordered an MIP rear shaft from SuperShafty today.

Side note...the ZOP Power 4s that sat for a couple years, and then again for a year, seems to be fine-ish. It balance charges out and all cells are within a tenth of a volt or so after running (really crawling and some trailing) the Bomber for a couple hours.

Great pics, my man!

I still haven't finished Bomber #2...

But Bomber #1 is still a joy to drive, and I added another wheel and tireset - Vanquish SHR Vintage wheels and BFGoodrich Krawler T/As.

Got some wrenching time in. Put in the steel beef tubes up front, SuperShafty rear driveshaft, and (finally!) my SSD Diamond rear axle! I am so stoked. Looks like a totally different machine to me now.
