Heya folks, I've never done a build thread before, but I've been lurking enough to know what needs to be posted. Mainly I've never done one because I own an SCX-10 and a Wraith, old news...nobody wants to see another one lol

But rally....that's fairly new stuff, and XV-01's are pretty new too. I know in my searching, I read every build thread there was...so I figured I'd contribute.

Fresh from the hobby shop!

and I love me a nice rear end!

And now the boring stuff:

3500kv Radient Reaktor Brushless Sensorless Motor
Radient Reaktor Brushless Sensorless 35A Waterproof ESC
Savöx 1251mg Low Profile Servo
Spektrum TX/RX

Geared stock at first, got way too hot on 3s, so I went with 19t pinion/81t spur, 48p gears. Much better temps. Probably go with a 20t pinion when the 77t slipper clutch comes in and modify the battery tray to accept my 2s Gens Ace packs, but that's a week or two away.

I used 60wt Losi Shock oil in front & rear with the stock springs, and 7k diff fluid up front with 2k diff fluid in the rear. Wow...it handles like a dream. No bounce, but there is some body roll on hard corners. Not so much that anything rubs, but I think sway bars would be good on tarmac. And the tires are actually pretty decent for out-of-the-box tires. Upgrades aren't needed RIGHT away, so that's a plus for my wallet lol

And of course, I have to give credit for the two guys that helped me IMMENSELY with advice and time.

Turtle for putting up with my 12+ PM's on RCCrawler, asking for info. He advised the diff fluids and hop-ups that I have on order, as well as the servo suggestion, which I must say is spot on. He was even so kind as to give me hotlinks to the exact parts I should buy. Saved me TONS of time.

And Crazyloon13 for working out a color scheme with me and working his magic, painting it for me! I'm VERY happy with the way it turned out, because frankly...I hate masking and painting lol.

Overall, I loved the build (but I hate turnbuckles, my fingers still hurt!) and I'll definitely be building another Tamiya in the future. The quality is as good as I could have hoped for, and it's just an AWESOME car!

So, hopefully you enjoyed the pictures, and more to come as I upgrade parts, race it, and inevitably, break it. See you CO folks out at an event soon! "thumbsup"

EDIT: Here's a worthwhile video showing just how awesome this thing is!

Good to see this one come together. "thumbsup"

A little trick I do for turnbuckles, I put them in my drill it tends to save the fingers. :ror:

Nice, I'm going to go off everyone's builds as well. Last week ordered 3 hopups from Japan and Hong Kong received in 5 and 7 days. Today ordered the Titanium screw set and yeah racing aluminum stuff so only thing I'll need is the right servo. I've heard more positive than negative on the savox so I'm going to give it a shot as well. "thumbsup"

First "off-road" test with the XV-01:

1) The ride height is a bit too low. I kept getting hung up on really small bumps if I wasn't going fast enough to slide the chassis over them. Going to try the longer rod ends for the shocks.

2) The stock servo saver is crap-tastic. Should have put the Kimbrough servo saver I ordered on before running it. The Tamiya saver wouldn't hold together for beans lol

3) NEEDS MOAR STEERING ANGLE. I have the CVD's on order from the far East, so when they get here, hopefully that helps. But the tight turns at Hoon-470 were impossible to take at any sort of respectable speed lol

Other than that, no issues, no broken parts, and I'm going back tomorrow! I'll get some video footage this time ;-)

Spent some time this weekend doing testing (ok...bashing) both on Tarmac and at the local track (Awesome track BTW Turtle!) Here's the videos!

And here's some footage of Turtle doing his thing lol (Waiting for CVD's before I run mine anymore)

The CVD Part Numbers:
53501
51445
51444

The Suspension Mount Part Numbers:
54376 (1XJ) Separate mounts for the front.
54379 (1XJ) Full Mount for the front.

Ooh wee! Look at those axles. Those dog bones really tore them up!

Oh well, all the parts from above are installed and now I'm waiting on Mother Nature to quit with this freak snow storm.

Finally the slipper clutch came in. I have a 22t pinion I'm going to try with the 77t of the slipper, but likely end up with a 20t on there, depending on temps.

And I hacked up the chassis to accept my 2S LiPo packs. This part hurt a little bit.

Is that 2 cell working better for you.. I see you did some moding to get it to fit..lol ouch!..

Haven't tested it yet, putting on the slipper now. But yeah, it was either cut out the chassis, or continue not using my 3 2S packs I had laying around from the SCT....and get new packs that fit. Didn't seem cost effective to waste perfectly good packs.

And a new chassis is still cheaper than new packs would be :lmao:

Street test done. And it was A W E S O M E !

A bit less power (going from 3S to 2S, duh) but more smooth and easier to control. I heard the slipper do it's job a few times, so I'm very happy with that.

And the heat is VERY reasonable on 2S with the 22/77 gearing. Barely warm on the motor.

Now my only issue with the car is this ESC's "Over-Current Protection". It'll drop to 1/2 power after about 30 minutes of running. Granted, it was long street speed runs and hard turning/drifting, but...really? On the upside, a quick on/off cycle clears it and allows for more full speed running for the rest of the pack. Which, BTW, I'm happy to say was about 45min (5000mAh 40c 2S).

Overall, I'm very pleased and I can't wait to get it on the track at Hoon470!

First actual off road, solo, running video completed.

Again, I can't say it enough, this thing is A M A Z I N G! "thumbsup"
