Ive been into the RC world for a good few years now despite only being 16 and I've seen some real nice custom engine bays, however these are mainly in drifters but a couple in 4x4s and I've always been tempted to have a go at one but does anyone know what to make them out of??

Thanks in advance

I'd have to say that most people probably use styrene for the engine bay itself. What you decide to do for an engine is another matter.

You can find different scale model motors on Ebay from time to time.
The engine bay itself would need to be styrene like Dudeman said.
Could drop big bucks on an RC4WD Fracture motor and trans.

I have a couple of motors like this. Prob 12th scale.

I've seen lots of engine bays in the drift world of R/C, usually made out of styrene, sometimes lexan, and even cardboard. The engines are sometimes models, but are usually custom made out of styrene and/or bits and pieces like toy car gears, battery holders, etc. I actually have a toy R/C hardbody skyline that already has an engine bay built in. Plus, I've started making a V8 engine for a future scale crawler.

wow! thanks for the info guys :) once ive built my d90 pick up i may just set about doing one of these from styrene :D

In my old Wraith

I used one from the Ridemakerz toy line...you can pick the engine up for about $4 at Toys R Us...Crawford Performance Engineering sells them for $8 or so.
or if you look on ebay, you can see sheisters selling the Engines for $25 and up LOL

Like this...

OR

or this

I'm all for folks taking initiative for making some coin on existing stuff, but that markup is pretty weak and straight up shady.:flipoff:

I managed to put together an RB26 engine for my AE86 trueno coupe drifter! It looked fantastic but over time it took a beating and just kinda...fell apart :( Styrene is good fun to work with and I encourage everyone to give it a go!
